This is awesome, thank you for the write-up!
I don’t know what it would be called but would you say that the lighter colored portion of the stipe at the top between the cap and sometimes present veil remnants/annulus is any identification help compared with look-alikes?
Recently was able to get subspectabilis to pin indoors and can’t wait for the season to hunt for more.

Moria841 said: In terms of the stipe apex zone, yes freshly opened G. subapectabilis does usually exhibit that lighter feature when young, but so do some Cortinarius and others, there's this one i remember seeing that has this big orange floppy veil that opens up that also has a light stipe apex, but i'm blanking on the name, i think it was a phaeo-something. Plus, that zone can turn yellow-orange farely quickly as the mushroom ages
Thanks for the great info and proper name for the zone.
One more question if you don’t mind: do you know if subspectabilis will come back in the same spot for multiple years?

Awesome to know, thank you! Some rain hopefully coming in a few days so I’ll be sure to check that spot and see if anything’s stirring.

Now we’re talking!

Three clusters all pretty close together. Must have missed the other two on previous hikes. You can see a few of the aborted mushrooms in a couple of the photos. One of them had some blue/green coloring but I couldn’t capture with a photo so I omitted. What a wonderful smell!
Last year I only found one mushroom similar to the large one photographed. Have you noticed a colony expanding like this before or more likely new colonies from the spores dropped last year?

Going to inoculate everything You ever messed with starting outdoor spots? I buried the bottom of the cluster from these most recent. Burying grains and spent sub didn’t do much this year but may take a year to establish.
Also, how would I go about requesting G. subspectabilis being added under Texas in the hunting info section? I’ll toss these photos up on mushroomobserver anyhow.
Thanks again!

Damn northerners with your early Gymnopilus season. Beautiful finds so far! Y’all getting me excited for the cooler weather.
Quick question about subspectabilis. Does anyone know if a freeze has anything to do with setting fruit? Looks like we’re going to get a two or three week earlier freeze this year here in the south so wondering if I should be checking the spots a bit earlier. Usually find the subspectabilis around early to mid December where I’m at.

My G. subspectabilis patch putting a first cluster out in East Texas. This is about a month earlier (photo taken 11/14) than I typically find them. Maybe out a bit earlier from the earlier first freeze, maturity of the colony, or I’ve been missing a first flush for the last couple years
