Psilocybe aff. aztecorum season 2022 * 2
    #27972166 -

Hi everyone, the P. aztecorum season is well underway here in Nova Scotia! I found these ones growing in a seasonal floodplain under a fallen red maple (Acer rubrum). Looking at the state of maturity of these fbs, I'm guessing that they are at least a week old. My apologies for the pics, they're not the best quality, hopefully more will be coming over the next few days/weeks. I'm hoping we see a lot more fruitings in the aftermath of Fiona...before she hit, it was a pretty dry season...

What makes you think these are Psilocybe? They look more like Hypholoma to me.

Can you show us the stem base, and any bruising observed?

:whathesaid:

Caps seem a little too striate and I see 0 evidence of blueing. Psilocybe aztecorum blue strongly from what I've seen. I don't think these are psilocybe but I'm happy to be proven wrong with more evidence.

Hi Duggstar and MentalPariah,
I wasn't looking for an ID. I have been gathering and enjoying this species since 2018. I have been finding them at that site (pictured) for the past couple years. I find that P. aztecorum, or at least the aff. species that grows here, is morphologically variable depending on stage of growth and environmental conditions (see pic from the woodpile from earlier in the week). Having said that, this is the only location that produces such striate caps (at least so far). I find that none of the P. aztecorum bruise super blue, only a little, but they are definitely active. As you both probably know, not all Psilocybes bruise dark blue and the bluing reaction is not always consistent even within a given species. When I have a chance, I'd be happy to take a pic of the bluing rxn and share it...

edit: to your question Duggstar, when I first encountered this species several  years ago, I did microscopy work on them, using Guzman's monograph to ID. I have to admit, at that time I thought they were P. caerulipes, but definitely not.

I know you weren't looking for an identification, we were just stating they don't appear to be psilocybe.

That said however, I've been pouring over pictures of aztecorum/quebecensis because I start to doubt myself at times. The mushrooms from the Mexican cloud forests look NOTHING like these....but I found a THREAD someone posted from Canada and I will concede there is some resemblance from those pictured. I would still like to see some sign of psilocybe though....

Looks very Psilocybe to me, especially the stem. Your mushrooms remind me of Psilocybe serbica, which shouldn't come as a surprise, because those two are closest relatives. I see the point MP is making thought, some collections of this species really look nothing like this, so it might be some speciation going, not just phenotype variability.

I see what you mean about other aztecorum not looking like this. I see signs of psilocybe though, the white stems covered with small fibers and there is blue bruising visible at the base of the mushroom on the left in this photo. A photo of the gills would be helpful

Hi everyone,
I'm not sure if I will remember to address all the questions - feel free to ask again if I don't. I have found P. aztecorum in mixed stands, typically hardwood (American beech, red maple are the two dominant species), and growing on coarse woody debris on the forest floor. I have found specimens that look very similar to the photos (from Mexico) that Cactu uploaded here a number of years ago...but I have also seen greater morphological diversity than is evident in those pics. Here is a pic of some mushrooms that I picked this morning that shows the bluing rxn plus the characteristic basal rhizomorph common to P. aztecorum. I hope this post encourages others in the Northeast (and other places where P. aff. aztecorum has been found) to go looking!

Near sea-level...

edit: maybe even below sea-level in the case of the ones found in the riparian zone...
