Can you turn an annual into a perennial by merely stopping its flowering phase?
    #27958959 - 09/20/22 01:00 PM (1 year, 4 months ago)

Cannabis is an annual. People have said about cannabis, though, that it can be stopped from dying if kept prepetually in its vegetative form, for years and years.

So couldn't this be true for all annuals? If kept in insulated environments away from winter, and if groomed to never go to the flowering stage - eg wheat 's florets always being groomed and trimmed like it was a lawn grass - could wheat be kept alive indefinitely? And for all other plants with seasonal cycles, couldn't you regulate them by controlling its reproduction?

I’m just curious why on earth you want to do that to cannabis…

So I've heard, many growers keep plants in veg to continue to take clones from. It can be used to grow slowly as a perpetual source of new clones that are then transferred to flowering conditions.

That actually makes sense then.
It would be interesting if other plants could be used in that way too.

many can, it wouldnt be true for all annuals though, and everything has a life span. a lot of "annual" nightshades are actually perennial in their native tropical habitats and will do that especially peppers and tobacco. but a lot of plants its not worthwhile as they freak out and grow all deformed (tomatoes) to where they wont successfully produce. i think the biggest hindrance is the root systems on many annuals (especially northern-origin or mountain plants) are not meant to last more than one growing season

That's exactly how cannabis is preserved as mothers for cloning purposes.

Not all annuals, but probably quite a few. If you are using the cannabis analogy, there other plants that will be like autoflowers that you won't be able to keep from doing what their genes are programmed to do.

Exactly Cannabis is photosensitive so you can manipulate the light hours to keep it in veg, this is very different to an annual and a perennial.

Hm, okay. Makes sense.
Heard that term around but never fully understood it.
