Teragon,
The rye was crumbled up while wearing gloves that were previously wiped with alcohol, this was done quickly in front of an oven door on low setting.
Redman,
The compost is VERY moist and gives off its own humidity, and according to R.H.'s instructions, no spraying needs to be done, at all. I may find myself spraying after the first few flushes to add some moisture.

Customs is the problem. I think DB is going to give it a shot anyway though. Last we talked about it he was figuring out a formula for shipping rates to Canada.

Ryche,
The strain is B+. The moisture is INSANE! I like it. When I took the lid off today just for shits and grins, about 1/4 cup of moisture it seems slipped off the lid on to the top of colonizing compost. Oops. Have to be more careful. I was thinking about taping holes in the beginning because of evaporation...yeah right.
I'll keep you all posted.
24 hours later and there are nice solid masses of HEALTHY mycelium running throughout.
Keep an eye on this post in the following week, as I will be doing the updates on this post.

Ok, I'm starting to think that ther word "Compost" means something different in England, compared to the US.
What you have used there looks like it has lots of twigs and stuff in, but what exactly is it made up of? Is it homeade compost? In England, compost is usually a really rich soil, very very black, no twigs etc.
I'm thinking that you guys call what I described as compost "Peat moss".
Lets clear this up, this is hella confusing for me, as I am considering carrying out such a procedure during the summer.
Thanks

Chonger,
The rich black soil your referring to is usually store bought "compost", or so it claims. Not many people have had luck with that type, some say all the valuable nutrients have already been used up already. The following is copied from www.thehawkseye.com:
The main ingredients are cow dung, wood shavings used for animal bedding, and partially digested feed. Dung Brother compost is made specifically for mushrooms. Commercially bought compost in stores is made for plants in your gardens and has already been digested by fungi. Plants do not have the enzymes to do decomposition fungi does. The decomposition process is halted part way through to allow decomposers like mushroom mycelium to fully utilize all the nutrients in the compost for the mushrooms your growing. Commercially bought compost will work for mushroom growing to a small degree, but the results are now where as astounding as mushroom compost.

HolyDriver--- How is the smell from the kit, I know it is made of shit, but just how bad is it? If it is really bad, what do you use to make it not smell so shitty? Thanks man, this thread is providing me with tons of great info, keep up the good work and good luck with the rest of the kit.

It has no smell whatsoever. The rye has a slight aroma but not really that bad. The compost is oderless however.

Yes, as Eddie said, no smell at all! It almost smells clean, but nothing crappy or shroomy. I will post another picture tonight. Tomorrow I may begin to initiate pinning!

Teragon,
I am using a heating pad on low setting. Today is the 16th day and kit is almost colonized, except for yellow wet spots, everything is going good...check out my other post for a recent picture.
