Supplement question on Ashwaghanda KSM-66
    #27951522 - 09/15/22 02:37 PM (1 year, 4 months ago)

Looking for some advice - I took KSM-66 (500mg) ash last week and it felt amazing. I'm a long time sufferer of GAD and have brain fog trouble. This stuff lifted me out of that fog for the first time in a very long time. I felt sharp and my recall was on fire, everything made a lot more sense and I generally just felt "normal".

Now, after three days straight I thought I would have a break because I felt a little on edge, like I had a really intense caffeine rush.

This is where the low mood followed in some style. For the last 5 days I've felt pretty down in the dumps and lacked a lot of drive or interest to do anything. I've just about forced myself to the gym to get the blood pumping and get through the day, but beyond that it's been a shitty week mood wise.

After feeling that cognitive sharpness and "normality" from the Ash, I'm basically wondering if I should give it another shot? Or speak to a doctor? Or speak to a therapist? No doubt I need to work through my difficulties, but this experience with Ash has got me wondering if there is something amiss with me physically that could be obtained from a supplement to suppress my baseline anxiety.

Logically thinking, I feel like I should refocus my efforts on eating clean, exercising regularly and meditating as much as I can - but this little glimpse to how clear my brain felt taking this supplement really has got me thinking maybe there is another answer out there. Maybe I'm just being lazy, because the pill form is easier.

If anyone has had any similar experience or advice I'd love to hear it!

The ash might not be the reason you felt so crisp, moods can just be like convection anyway, even the healthiest mofo  in the world has bad weeks.

Find creative stuff to do when you feel low, even if it's just an adult coloring book or like, food prep or whatever.

I have taken Ashwaghanda several times and never noticed any effects at all. I honestly believe it is a total placebo, but some people seem to think it works. I have a similar opinion about valerian.

Personally, my mood, focus, and energy level all vary day by day with little reason. I can be super sharp one day and then the next have dense brain fog. I think it's  normal.  Just what the person above me said.

I took ashwhaganda for 2 weeks and felt bad for 5 days or so when I stopped, low mood and zero motivation... anxiety was worse. No such thing as a free lunch as they say, if you supplement your mood chemically you'll almost always rebound twice as bad when you finally stop.

Even though it's what everyone suggests, things like "eating clean" and exercising don't treat general anxiety disorder (exercise can actually trigger worse anxiety for many people). Endorphins from exercise can help manage symptoms short-term for some people, and the act of cooking and eating healthy can definitely make you feel a little happier or more content, but obviously masking symptoms is different from addressing the actual root cause of the anxiety.

Generalized anxiety is unrelenting, your entire pattern of thinking has essentially been hijacked and is in fight or flight mode constantly. The longer these thought patterns persist the more ingrained they become and the more difficult they are to break. You'll likely never get rid of generalized anxiety completely, but there are lots of ways to make it more manageable... sometimes it can even be advantageous.

Meditation is definitely a great thing to do with GAD, and can improve things a lot over time if you stick with it. Therapy and any sort of CBT exercises are effective for a lot of people, there are even some really good CBT apps. Socializing, creative pursuits and anything that puts you in a flow state are great ways to manage symptoms short term. Anxious thoughts can't really exist when the brain is in a focused attention or flow state

Yeah, I've heard the "no free lunch" thing a few times now haha. Completely valid, though. It was nice to feel that good but absolutely unrealistic to feel that good every single day - life seems to be full of the ups and downs. But hey, maybe it's nice to know if I have any event that might be stress inducing, perhaps a little Ash might help for such a day. Not all a waste of time.

Thank-you for your insightful words on GAD. I think you are absolutely correct. It's a scary thought about the patterns of thought becoming more ingrained and I can absolutely sense it in my life. Even social scenarios with close friends I've found myself becoming closed off due to anxiety/fear of social judgement, even with the people I trust most. These are not cycles I want to allow to manifest long term.

For now, I will keep up with the positive routine and really work hard to just ensure I am meditating a little every single day. My company offers 5 free therapy sessions, so I am looking to get that organised and explore some CBT options. I might also get a blood test done by my Doc just to rule out there isn't anything at play physically (I don't think there will be).

Appreciate your comment Feevers - do share any content that you might know of that could be useful for tackling GAD and or reference on CBT.

Nothing wrong with having a med or supplement to take "as needed". Ashwaghanda lost its effectiveness very quickly for me, but if it works then it's a great option. Larger doses of Valerian, lemon balm and L-Theanine are other supplements I've had a similar effect from. I have an ativan script for like 10 pills a year, other than as the occasional hangover cure I only use it if I have a large public speaking thing to do or a big social event with new people. A little bit extra GABA on my receptors can turn those things I dread into memorable life experiences. Taking it more than necessary gives me the exact opposite of what I'm looking for.

You're the expert on yourself, try to figure out when you feel the most/least anxious and why that is. Use meditation as an exercise that strengthens your ability to let the anxious thoughts go when they come up. Put your irrational thoughts and fears down on paper, and reframe them or challenge them. Structure your life in a way where you limit the unknowns and don't leave things hanging, all these little unfinished "to-do's" can really weigh you down with background anxiety that you may not even really know is there... and simply completing tasks you dread can sometimes give you spikes of dopamine and a feeling of well being throughout the day.

I haven't used it in awhile so I'm not sure if it's still a quality product, but there's a free CBT-based app called WoeBot that a lot of people find useful.
