obsessive compulsive disorder & shrooms
    #2794075 - 06/15/04 07:59 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I took shrooms last year around november and then again in feb. The first time all I could do was think about what I was doing wrong and what I need to do to get my life in order so much that I thought I was gonna break down crying. But then when I was coming down I felt at peace with myself. Next time I tripped I became extremely depressed and ashamed of myself. Then again when I came down I was fine.

When I was younger around 13 I was diagnosed with ocd and I was on meds for a while but eventually got off of them and overcame the ocd. Now i'm starting to get the ocd again just like I was when I was younger. My question is was it the shrooms that brought the ocd back up? I'm 50/50 on this one. I'm thinking to myself that it's not the shrooms because wouldn't I have been feeling this way right after I came down? Because it wasn't until about may that I started feelin like this. Then again i think what else could have caused this to come back after I blocked it out besides shrooms. And also now everytime I smoke I get really paranoid and self conscious but like the ocd this happened months after the shrooms. any extensive info on the after effects of shrooms would be really appreciated. thanks

Relax and let the transformation that is life happen. You are evolving and that can be a bit confusing for the conscious mind.
A diagnosis of OCD is a very clinical way of explaining neurotransmiters firing at an accelerated rate.
Slow down and see the fruit for what it is, and the doors and windows it allows you to see through.
If you're willing to look.
peace,
Joe

P.S. What's wrong with crying?
It's a great release of tension and compressed energy.

can shrooms trigger a relapse of OCD? imo yes. as due to tramatic events or mental remembrence of that feeling, neither which seemed to have happened to you from what i read. OCD is generally thought to be caused by deficiency in serotonin, and dysfunction in specfic brain areas (frontal lobe, caudate nucleus) shrooms don't really depleate your brain of any neurotransmitters though. i would think if they triggered it, it would be more immediate like you say. things like OCD do relapse for no specfic reason, other than your brain is and always has been diffrent then those who don't suffer OCD. If it's really affecting your everyday life (like true OCD does) then you should probably seek psychotherapy if you want help, if not cool. i don't really know how much long-term info there is on the effects of shrooms, i really don't think there has been too many (if any) studies on such things, but honestly i never really searched that hard. if it's out there it will be on www.erowid.org

it's nothing that I am happy about having. I obsess about thoughts that I do not want to have which bothers me. The only time it gets better is when I keep myself busy but when I'm not it comes right back. I'm a little scared too because my dads son from another marriage has schizoprhenia and I heard shrooms can trigger all sorts of things like that.

and nothing is wrong with crying and waking up to what I need to do like the first experience I had with mushrooms but what i'm having now is completely different. And the 2nd time I shroomed I was smiling but crying inside in a panic and extremely scared. Everytime I smoked weed I start feeling the same way. I mean I can control it but like the first time I had ocd it took me a while to overcome it and it sucks that I gotta go through that again. I'm done with drugs altogether.

thanks for the link to the site i'll check it out. and with relapsing I think the only reason I relapsed was because I started thinking about the thoughts that I was obsessing about when I was younger. Then almost instantly they came back but the thing is i've thought of them from time to time before I shroomed but i didn't think twice about them. Now it just stays with me.

It's rather strange actually that you suspect the shrooms made you relapse into OCD, because there's some research going on into the beneficial effects of psilocybin on OCD. Some people even report having cured themselves from OCD unknowingly, just by tripping on shrooms.
Now, this obviously did not happen to you, maybe it was even the opposite.

I'm no specialist on OCD, but I know it is often 'cured' by behavioral therapy, which doesn't cure anything at all, actually, it just makes you adjust to the malfunction to lead as ordinary a life as you can. In your case, you didn't mention if you had therapy or if the recovery was spontaneous.
Anyway, it did come back and it may/may not have been triggered by your shroom trips (were those the first in your life?). Could it be that your condition never went away but just 'hid' instead? And that mushroom experiences made the symtoms come back, as a possible prelude to being cured? Maybe (warning: this is no advice!) what you should do is have a few more trips? I really don't know, and this is risky business, so be cautious. All I want to state is that there IS a link between psilocybin and OCD, and usually it's a reverse link compared to your story.

The best thing (but near impossible) would be to be able to trip under the supervision of a therapist in some kind of OCD research program.
The next best thing could be to find an open-minded therapist who could listen to your story and work on your OCD with you on a deeper level. Who knows, maybe you just triggered the first steps on the way to leaving OCD behind you...?

For more info on psilocybin-based OCD research, take a look at  the MAPS site, and type OCD in the search function, you'll find a lot.

Good luck

hey bro lend me your ear,bad thoughts happen, it was put to me like this thoughts are like birds flying over your head, you can't stop em but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair.Listen to what the trips are telling you, i use to get all parinoied and stuff but after a mega dose have been being brought to a better understanding of life and it's purpose.Sometimes it's not pretty to see our selfs as we relly are "as God" sees us.Like Aloudous huxely said the mind of man has it's darkest africas and hidden jungles.....Some steps you can take is to meditate to calm your mind, just be as still as you can in body and spirit,it's hard at first but gets easier with time.Try low doses, and dont get cuaght up in thought loops that bring ya down "it's hard at times" remeber the Light is always there ready to embrace you, peace and love Gypsy, oh yeah btw check out the spiritual forum good stuff in ther

Here's my opinion:
It ain't the shrooms, bro. OCD can be a terribly debililitating disorder. I speak from experience as a lifelong OCD/depressive. It is very common for depressive and OCD symptoms to appear, worsen, get better, reapper, etc. It is nice to think that an insightful, positive trip could "cure" OCD, but that's just as unlikely as a negative trip triggering a return of OCD.

I think shrooms can heighten your awareness of your suffering from OCD, by letting you step outside yourself and observe your thought patterns. But by simply understanding how ridiculous your obsessing may be from the vantage point of a good trip, this will not translate into being able to consciously, or even subconciously rid yourself of these symptoms. It's all chemical. To combat OCD you need to expose your body to standard psychiatric medication.

And don't be fooled by the hype surrounding certain "OCD meds". Drug companies finance studies aimed at isolating a particular result. For exapmle, Paxil is now approved for social anxiety disorder. What much of the scientific community fails to understand is that the chemical imbalance responsible for OCD, depression, and all the variants which enterprising doctors love to coin (Type I-B manic, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Personality Disorder, ADD etc.) are all controlled by similar mechanisms we still know virtually nothing about. That is why one person may respond fantastically to one anti-depressant medication while another may actually get worse on the same medication. Or a medication will work wonders for one symptom (social anxiety, say), but do next to nothing for others, like OCD, for example.

I think mushrooms can go a long way help you understand your disorder, and I do believe that OCD symptoms may settle down under the influence of mushrooms, but just as a pot high will come and go, as will a mushroom trip. It takes many patients several weeks, sometimes as much as six months before their bodies are ready to respond to a new medication. It is imperative that your body "sees" a medication for an extended period of time, as the drug needs to build to bloodlevel, and then overcome the chemical imbalance which is responsible for the OCD.

I ate way too many mushrooms when I was severely depressed, basically trying to self-medicate myself (shrooms can really break through a nasty depression in some cases) and had a horrific experience as my mind finally allowed itself to accept the fact that I was a suffering, miserable human being. I wouldn't say that was a positive or a negative experience, but I will tell you, that as you said with the pot making you terribly paranoid now, I can definately relate. I've heard it said often that pot merely intensifies the mood your in (a statement I don't fully support, but anyhow)- When I was really depressed, pot made me insanley paranoid when I was around other people. When I was by myself, it had virtually no effect whatsoever, except making me sleepy. Now that I am significantly better (after trying a medication that didn't work three times, it finally kicked in the fourth trial, this after five years of trying everything in the book in massive doses), my pot experiences are wonderful, and I can only imagine how cool shrooms will be.

But I think you're obsessing about that very fact- that shrooms somehow "screwed you up again". This is a delusion, and while I understand it may be inescapable in a particularly obsessive mind, I don't think it has any basis in reality. Coincidental timing, I would speculate. I think shrooms would freak a ton of people out by letting them see just how obsessive they really are. And unfortunately, to repeat myself, you can't will yourself to reverse your mind patterns, because even as you consciously tell yourself not to think those thoughts, you are thinking "don't think those thoughts" which is another obsession. When I came out of my blinding depression, my OCD became much better, and I was surprised at how little I was thinking. I think that is why depression is linked with lethargy- your mind is exhausting itself by running in constant circles by thinking too much. To have a really wonderful or insightful thought requires no thought whatsoever, which leads to the whole series of Zen/Taoist paradoxes (An empty mind...)

good luck,
matt

Whenever I'm tripping, I always come to realize just how obsessive my mind really is. I don't really notice it, otherwise, although I was diagnosed with OCD a few years ago. I don't really think that diagnosis is appropriate for me anymore though, as OCD doesn't really effect my life nowadays.

I never had OCD before.
A month after shrooms I noticed an OCD building up in me. I didn't understand it, but I'm SURE it was the shrooms. BECAUSE, shrooms work through the serotonergic system. The serotonergic system is responsible for OCD. The shrooms altered it and so now the OCD forms.
I got OCD from SHROOMS. AND PTSD.
Some people it makes things better, others, its so much worse. trust me dont do shrooms again if u dont want OCD.

Kind of interesting that you post this. A while back after my first few trips I started to notice that I was a little more compulsive with certain things. I think it was just me learning and evolving from those trips though. Shrooms has changed my life quite a bit and has been a great teacher. What you were experiencing when the shroom was telling you about what you were doing wrong was just a step in your evolution as a person.

Who said evolution wasn't a little painful sometimes?

This thread is from over 5 years ago!  And I replied to it back then!

And I still feel 100% the same way.  Shrooms have helped to cure my self-destructive OCD.  Love it.

What would be your advice for me since it will be my first time.

Thanks.

LOL pretty interesting.

Many studies show that it actually stops ocd to a degree for so long.

IMO while on mushrooms, I have no ocd at all. Upto 2-3 days later
their is almost no ocd. Then it fades for about a week or so after that.

Also when I smoked dmt, that had a similar helping effect.

Hello Draenei,

If I can have a full day without OCD affecting me one way or the other, that will mean paradise, that has not happened to me in a long time.

Yeah I know what you mean. Ocd can be a fuckin bastard. People should seriously be glad they don't have it.

Most people have no idea how difficult/extreme and odd it can be at times.

You don't rely want to be super reliant on psychs. But it def can help in a magical way for a period of time.

Aim for a "good" trip plan it out (set/setting) research, also iv even been helped with a relatively bad trip before.

Other than entheogens

Daily long term cardio and weightlifting
and
Daily meditation helps quite alot.

Also a great mind and body concept to use is. "their is no disease"
believing that you don't have it , will reduce its magnitude abit and make you feel more comfortable.
