None of the kits come with soil as a substrate. They may contain some "soil" (which probably isn't soil either) for a casing layer, but not for a substrate. psilocybe cubensis is a dung-lover, but as a primary and secondary decomposer, it will fruit on grains, too. Including: rye, millet, wheat, quinoa, brown rice, etc. dont buy a kit. follow this url and it will tell you everything you need to know to get you started for dirt cheap. it's practically the first step everyone takes.

Was it one of those homestead kits? Seeing as how those kits are marketed as "fast-food" type mushroom kits, they probably don't bother to go into depth about what's in the "soil" that makes it work. The way they probably see it, is it's unnecessary and it keeps you coming back and buying their kits.
