Problems with mycelium growth on casing....
    #2794053 - 06/15/04 07:34 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

My latest venture includes several casings made from millet/brf/verm cakes, cased with coir/verm mix.

my terrarium is at a constant 99% RH and around 78-80 degrees and I fan at least 4 or 5 times daily

Now my problem has to do with mycelium growth. Extremely pourous (or fluffy, it would seem) mycelium seems to be agressively growing up the bases of the mushrooms. Its almost like halfway between rhizos and actual mushroom flesh and is brilliantly white.

Anyway, what I have noticed about this mycelium is: it is quickly climbing up the stems of the shrooms (almost halfway on some!), the shrooms have been stunted and barely seem to be growing at all anymore, and some of the shrooms have a somewhat shriveled look and some are splitting thin layers of flesh from their stems.

There are 2 things I that could have possibly caused this problem:
1. Lack of moisture. The casings were fairly dry from the start and there simply may not be enough water to support full growth of all the mushrooms. (this may explain the shriveled look of some of the larger ones??)
2. Excess humidity. In this case, I'm not sure what to do, I always though above 95% and I couldn't go wrong.

Anyone please, if you have ever had a similar problem or have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. This problem is beginning to have major effect on my yeild and i would like to resolve it.

Too high humidity.

Casings don't need as much humidity as cakes.I found that my casings do well around 90% humidity,as they provide quite abit themselves.

So the excess mycelium can actually stunt the fruits? Or do you think the fruits can be stunted by too much humidity? Sorry to hijack, but it's on topic, no?

This pics shows too high humidity that resulted in growth coming to halt. The pins you see with the red heads are new fruits that have appeared after adjustments were made to the humidity level

As you can see some(most all)of these pins are completely covered with mycelium.

The spot that looks green is actually a rotten abort.

oooh thank you! That looks a lot worse than my foaf's. She just has it crawling up the stems and a few spots on the caps. From what i have read, this is ok. What is your opinion, if I may ask??

Thanks.

I would never case with perlite, but,I assume you were actually thinking of vermiculite.

That particular casing was a mix of 60/40 coir verm.

I would love to have 90% RH but how do you go about achieving that? I can't seem to get it. I removed all the geolite from my terrarium, approx. 60L or 500 quarts volume, and put the cases back in only to find that RH remained at 99% all night once again.

I cannot seem to get the humidity to stay steady at anything below 99%! if there are any methods that you recommend, if you could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

just keep fanning it,that will drop the humidity everytime you open it to fan.Just don't fan too much as you will dry out the casing-it's a fine line unless you have a fully automated setup.
