there's nothing wrong with using a bottom layer of verm in a casing.  it's really a matter of preference.  i've tried it a few times and it has worked well   just be sure to sterilize the verm.  i like to put it in a microwavable tupperware and nuke for 10 minutes (with the water).

I just wanted to wish you luck if you attempt casing. If you have any trouble with it as I did you might want to check out my post which is currently in the advanced forum: Growing with Moisture Plus.  I couldn't case with anything. Verm, soil, 50/50. None of it worked for me.

After a couple of my first grows, it seems a few contaminated jars left me with an endless supply of spores floating around the house. They are very hard to get rid of if you don't have any kind of air filtration system. I had a very hard time even getting plain pf cakes to not contaminate after that, until I tried using popcorn. No contams since.

The bottom layer isn't as much for adding moisture as it is a place for myc piss to run so it is nice to have.

I usually make it the same depth as the top.

Quote:

If you have an inch of colonized substrate, you should have 1/4 to 1/2 thick casing layer and bottom layer.
Basically. For every inch of substrate, you need 1/4th an inch of casing layer.

Do you mean shared between top and bottom like with a 1 to 1/2 ratio &
If I have 2 inches of substrate would I have 1/2 on top 1/2 on the bottom?
