Mutant cacti?
    #2793737 - 06/15/04 02:30 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I have been looking at some pretty neat looking cacti here on the boards. Such as the 4 ribed brig, and that really fucked up pedro that looks like coral or somthing.

Anyway first question is, is it genetic or just an individual freak? Could one take cuttings from them and get more of the same? Same with seeds produced for 2 of the same mutant? I had some orchid cactus a while back that would grow cylinders, 2/3/4/5/6 sided, and squarish "leafs" all from the same plant. Was really interesting.

Anyway if genetic, is there anywhere that sells such beaut's?

thanks
kada

I'm not sure if it's genetic or not, but there are places that sell them. Most of the sources for them are in Europe from what I've seen and they normaly go for a pretty penny :\

I'm the owner of one of those rare 4 sided T. Bridgesii. The one I have was cut when I purchased it. It now has a pup on it that is also 4 sided. I might have to put up a pic of this puppy!

You can find the monstrose Pedro on ebay once in a while. They are also pricey. I've yet to see a 4 sided Bridgesii on ebay... bet it would be expensive since in Indian lore.... it is rare and most sought after.

In my opinion, growing conditions can affect rib count. For example, when I've moved my cacti to different lighting configurations, I've had ribs added and deleted.

I love monstrose cacti, they are very sculptural and unique. The trichocereus monstrose definatly are my favs.

I have 2 small trichocereus peruvianus that are taking quite different forms next to each other outdoors, nothing as extreme as a monstrose though. Columnar cacti rule!
