I had energy blackout the other day and my windows got completely fucked up. Of course I don't have UPS and only one hard drive (nor have I friends who'd kindly help with their HDDs to backup my files). So I will just have to format. I have 2 writeable CDs and that's it - thats all I can take with me to the other side. Farewell my movies, mushroom library, my music collection and everything else. I'll be back later and start everything from 0...

hmm why dont you partition the HD with partition magic into 2 drives then transfer your backup stuff to the one drive then format the other, transfer the stuff to that drive then format the one they were on, then install windows to that one

You just click on create new drive, and paste all important files into that drive and delete the bad drive. I dont know where you can find the "create new drive" option though. Probably by clicking the right mouse button in the "My Computer" file... i dunno... to lazy to find out, and fucked up on 5 weird pills.

look up on google how to use fdisk. then go into DOS, use fdisk, create another partition, etc etc etc...

it's really not such a serious problem!

fdisking a live partition will destroy it.

no saving data then :P

Would need to use partition magic or a similar utility that lets you 'resize' a lvie partition in order to copy files over, format, reinstall etc.

If you are running XP, try booting from CDROM, go to the recovery console, and run 'chkdsk /p'. I have been amazed at some of the "dead" machines this command has brought back to life. Now if only Micro$oft could figure out how to write a file system that doesn't delete open files when the machine crashes...
