Hoja Santa
    #27934088 - 09/04/22 06:02 PM (1 year, 4 months ago)

Any info on growing hoja santa? Looking for the biggest yield to get the most essential oil from.

Isn’t most the EO in the roots, aeroponics maybe?

I was thinking of a grow shelf with fluorescent t8s on each shelf, this way several layers of plants could be in the footprint of a smaller number.

Vertical grow!

How many hoja Santa plants would it take to get 500mL of the essential oil.

What about cinnamon camphora?

There is a lot of it growing here in so cal, the tree trimmer wood chipper trucks constantly seem to be going.

Any idea how to get the safrole from the Essential oil of this plant?

It’s in the roots or what??? How much of the EO of this camphor tree is there/how much of it contains safrole?

Is the cinnamon camphora tree in so cal the same —( strain?) that they used to make the brown camphor oil with?

It’d be a fun experiment to steam distill some and separate its constituents

Any one have a good recommendation or idea for a steam distillation still for collecting oil? Something efficient

I am growing hoja santa (Piper auritum) in USDA zone 9.
The plant has spread to a nice stand that grows like crazy and is constantly in bloom during summer.
The roots are very aromatic, but I have no experience with extracting essential oils.
Very easy to propagate from root divisions.
