mycobag problem
    #2793282 - 06/14/04 08:56 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Hey all,
My bags have colonized fast, i mashed them a couple times and they look good. However, the bottoms seem to stay uncolonized...and if there is any colonization it is verrry slow. Anyone know why? Any way to fix? Thanks!

Some substrate gets in the folded flaps of the bag, make sure you are looking at the bottom of the cake, not just the bottom of the bag.

cervantes and april are both accurate.
make sure to really mix up the bags before use and after inoculation, mycobags can take a good amount of abuse, i have found the rye based bags tend to settle a good deal, and mixing up the bag a few times really helps. also you can lean the bags over when everything except the bottom is colonized, this sometimes quickens the bottom colonization. just by the nature of the mycobag, gravity makes the substrate settle, the bottom then packs making it a slow colonizer. also if you wait you will ensure that the middle of your bags are also colonized all the way through.

Mycobags just don't work very well IME. I have no idea why not. I would switch to jars if I were you.

I've had great luck with the bags, my experience with them is pretty extensive
several years using both bags and jars, I also draw knowledge and experience from a few other users that have used them with great sucsess. it may possibly be your handling techniques that have led to your problems with the bags

generaly when the bottom remains uncolonized its as was stated but Cervantes and ZeroZero, or on a few occasions its due to an excess of moisture pooling at the bottom, that being a problem thats easy to identify.

ive noticed the bottoms dont always colonize. they still work well. as long as its only a little bit at the bottom.

I've seen a lot of people have failures also. Seems like more failures than successes are reported, but then again that's how things tend to go with self-reporting.

so turning the bag on its side may help? also is there an easy way to determine it is colonized all the way through besides breaking it up again?

yo gratefulj,
i have found that if you dont mash up the bags enough the bottoms stays a little wet and maybe a little too packed down, so i have found that tipping the bag over onto its side seems to help the mycelia finish colonizing, that is if you didt mix up the bag. this is for rye bags only, cause thats what i know about. and my rule of thumb is if you think its done colonizing give it another week, watching for overlay of course. tipping the bag could also move some of the moisture around the bag, just dont get the filter patch wet.
also like prisoner#1 said it is possible that improper handling of your "bags" could lead to poor performance. ha

You dont get overlay on a block o myc, overlay is whey myc comes through a casing.

Turning the bag on its side should drain teh extra water away from the bottom so it might help. If your using it as spawn or making a casing out of it give it that extra week or so, if your uising as a block then birth it.
