Since I'm now focusing exclusively on this active mushroom until I figure it out, I've been thinking about it a lot.

For all of us having issues with contamination, I think the first and most simple test is:
  • Get a jar fully colonized with clean agar.
  • Case it with pasteurized cactus soil (or coir - but haven't tried).
  • Put it in fruiting conditions.
  • Wait.

I've had 80% successes with this approach. Tiny harvests, but clone-able mushrooms.
Very simple, not too much resources & time spent.

Here is an example (that I already posted before, but I replicated multiple times since):

Max I got was 2 flushes, but most time only 1. Each time I see my grain contaminating. Which makes me think something is off with my prep.

I think I got the idea from smalltalk_canceled, so hat's off to him.

Btw, I tried to mimic your grows, SirPsycho, but with no luck. I used tall PP5 bottles, stuffed to the rim. I used pure coco and millet spawn, and the one I cased with humus has triched, the other one I cased with coco is running for almost two months, it was cold shocked, dunked, dryed and rehydrated, the only thing I didn't try is scratching. But I don't give up, I'll try making a bag with only hay + millet spawn and see what it brings.

Did you do a regular S2B type thing with colonized spawn dumped into sub or did you follow Muda's write up?

I am exactly in the same position. I might try what melgo just mentioned for a couple of my jars to be on the safe side.

Is there a specific tek for pasturizing cactus soil or do you use the bucket tek like you would for coir?

Yeah. But you can also use verm strait out of the bag. And keep it moist with a syringe.

People who have problems with the sub and don't see pins in 2 weeks, what are your fruiting temperatures?

Yes, it was a regular S2B. Now I'll try Muda's tek (I figured same technique and tried it with pans with no luck, so I concentrated on my nats grow), I'll try pasteurized straw in a bag and I'll try fruiting from spawn jar cased with verm (or cactus soil?)

It was 28-29C for the whole month, sometimes dropping to 26-27, as I couldn't make it colder with this crazy hot August. Now it's around 26. I know that temps closer to 20 are much better, but the choise is either 15 or 26

lost all my boxes to trich, 1 a few days after casing. Still have grains colonizing that aren't showing any signs of sabotage but I'm not sure I can trust them either.  Guess I'll start new plates

I think I'll adopt this approach to try narrowing in on my semp contamination.  I like the idea of using the jar as a way to cut out the root cause of contam 50/50:  If you see the contents of the jar contaminating while fruiting it, you know that the source of contam is not related to spawning to a tub, etc. but rather something with the culture isolation or grain prep.

In my case, I believe the root problem for me will come out to me culture isolation but I'm going to use this strategy and find out.
