The Rent is Too Damn High! 1

I wonder how much longer Americans will be able to sit back and pretend that rampant greed and corruption isn't a problem in this country. Things are starting to really hit home, with soaring energy bills, and housing costs:
Quote:
Close to one-fifth of Americans worry they will face eviction in the next two months amid soaring rents and inflation.
But the threat is greatest in Georgia, where 65 percent of renters are staring down evictions, according to a new report from Quote Wizard.
After Georgia, the danger of eviction is highest in Louisiana, Vermont, Delaware and Florida. And Black and Hispanic communities are more likely to face evictions.
The report notes that wages have failed to keep up with housing costs over the past decade, as incomes have increased by 30 percent compared to housing prices, which have risen by 70 percent nationwide. This has left many renters behind in their monthly rents and homeowners close to foreclosure.
Around 15 percent of renters nationwide are behind in their rents, but the rate is highest in Louisiana at 30 percent.
Covid crippled the American economy, and as people are now trying to put their lives back together, we see energy companies hiking prices, making record profits, and the lords of the land will soon be throwing millions of Americans out on their ass.
It seems to me, in these troubling times, that what America truly needs more than ever, is good leadership. Thankfully, we have Joe Biden at the helm. He's laser focused on solving the MAGA problem in America, so we have nothing to worry about!
Also, the Democrats have assured us, with all of their great wisdom, that they will FIGHT for our right to a $15 minimum wage, by 2026. Hopefully they can make it happen for us. Their track record for getting things done is impeccable!
Imagine it! $15 an hour for every hard working person in America. In 2026, that will be enough money to buy half a breakfast at McDonalds! Democrats are ensuring that NONE of us will COMPLETELY starve. They're looking out for the little guy!

Only 1.9 % of workers make the federal minimum wage . Down from 13% in 1980 . This isn't going to affect every American worker but it will affect me . My union will use this to fight for another raise . I'm going to make more money for sure because of this so , let's go Brandon !

That's the whole point Brandon.
Jesus christ... Now I'm going to posit an idea that you've just confirmed, and you're going to argue against it lol..
The minimum wage is a reference wage. A higher minimum wage means a higher wage for everyone. That's why we all benefit from higher minimum wages, because there's no way in hell I'm going to weld in the summer heat, for the same wages as a burger flipper at McDonalds. Employers are going to have to pay me more. Significantly more.

The federal minimum wage as a metric or guidepost has been horseshit for awhile. It's about $7.25 and it's 2022. That's says it all.
I agree, rent is high. When you cant evict people that don't pay, obviously the owners are going to try and recoup that. Not saying that's the only reason....one of many. It was semi possible back in the day to have a shitty job and live in an apartment.....I dont see that anymore without some serious cohabitation. My mortage payment is less than a one bedroom apt. I have a decent size home with acerage.
What is the solution?

The gen Z solution. Live with your parents until your 40.
Idk about federal minimum wage but where i live its like $11 last time i checked. I have never worked for minimum wage in my life. I have worked some pretty low on the rung jobs but still they paid more than minimum wage for the state.
Currently mortgage on a modest house in my area is considerably lower than rent. It was even pre-covid. The only solution i have found is to work 60-70 hours per week and always work on learning new skills to land a better job when i quit this one.

Mortgages have always been cheaper than rent, that’s why landlords become obscenely rich from doing nothing. But if the bank won’t give you a loan then you’re fucked.

What is the solution?
The solution is rent control, and preventing corporations from buying residential houses. There are things that can be done, certainly.
If you want my real solution to all of the ills of our society, I'll give you an even better one. German style worker councils, so that workers have a say in how large corporations operate. Mondragon style worker cooperatives. Democratization of the workplace. The way things are today, corporate board members vote on million dollar bonuses for themselves. If workers had representation on the board, they would be able to pay themselves adequate wages for survival+.
Most of the problems in our society are caused by the collusion of government and wall street. If the people take control of business, they will ensure that businesses operate in a way that is beneficial to workers, and the nation.
We will never enact the changes needed in this country by voting. It just won't happen.

It's not about that. I didn't write this post to bitch about my rent lol. I wrote it to bitch about the situation in America.

I've done well, better than most even, but that was because I was tactful, I saw the market rising and bought my house before the prices rose out of my affordability.
Now everyone has to wait for the next crash.
The crash is coming and people are upset about the crash.
Why are they upset? Cause when shit comes crashing down people start losing jobs.
Hell I might even lose mine if it crashes down hard enough.
But I have a well rounded set of skills that allow me to most likely find a job under any conditions, at least hopefully so I am not that worried about it.
But for the average joe, mass drug addiction will happen.
Which is good cause if my worst case scenario happens where I can't find work at all, well I will just do what I did last recession. I will sell drugs.

A lot of people who bought houses more recently are going to be under water, just like after the banking crisis. That can take a lot of years to come back from.

The United States is a very sought after locale. You're going to have competition if you want to live there. It's only natural, it's called free market capitalism.
If you can't compete, may I suggest moving to a place were there's less demand?

I don’t know if it’s funny or sad that most of the people in this country believe this shit.
Wealth concentrating in fewer and fewer hands decade after decade? It’s so competitive!

Oh yes! How competitive. The government CARES act gives out thousands of dollars to average citizens and hundreds of thousands of dollars to the wealthy. How competitive. The government makes small businesses shut down because of covid, and they go out of business, how competitive. The government gives out PPP loans to business owners, how competitive. Fucking stupid.
