I want to try casing. Should i break up a cake?
    #2792987 - 06/14/04 06:45 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I was planning on breaking up my last cake and try a small casing. I have a little rubbermaid container that will be just right.

Should i just case the cake to wet vermiculite, or can i mix the vermiculite with something else to make the whole thing regrow and fruit?

i find these two methods, 'bulk' and 'case' are a little blurred in many posts.

I would rather bulk, have the whole container produce. But if anyone thinks it would be a waste, then i will just case the case to plain vermiculite

Is the cake fresh or spent? If it is fresh, you can case it to wet, sterilized vermiculite (some say sterilizing it isn't necessary but it might be better to be on the safe side?) or to some other casing mix. Some people use nutritive casing layers like compost that provide not only moisture but added nutrients to the mycelium, which has doubtless expended lots of them in colonization.

Still, the most important thing about the casing layer is that it provides easily accessible moisture to the dehyrated mycelium. It is possible that casing may increase yields, or at least first-flush yields, by increasing the surface area of the mycelial network... mycelium is likely programmed not to COMPLETELY exhaust itself in producing mushrooms, although I could be wrong on that, but casing may make it put more of its available "self" into mushrooms. I don't really know on that one.

I'm sure you'll get replies from more experienced people, so good luck!

I'd get some peat moss and case using the 50/50 teck, it works great.

Im using fresh cakes.

So maybe 50% verm and 50% Wild Bird Seed? i like that idea, anyone else?

FAQs works wonders

'bulk' and 'case' are totally differnt things

bulks is just that, large volume, usually taking up the whole bin.

case is a non-nutritive layer mainly to provide moisture.

I wouldn't use birdseed, stick with strait verm if you have to, but get some coco coir or peat moss if you can and use the tecks on the shroomery.

You can't spawn your cake to wild bird seed in a container unless you do this in a completely sterile environement.  Moist wirld bird seed will contaminate extremely easily.  That's why you have to colonize every type of grain in a jar with air filter (for air exchange) and work with sterilized grain.

Your options are as follow :

1) Fruit your cake
2) Case your cake with a casing layer (1 cake is not much.  Either use a very small container that will give you at least 2 inches of broken substrate or simply burry the whole cake without breaking it)
3) Spawn your cake to some bulk (straw,  manure, etc.), let the bulk colonize then case and fruit.

You better read a lot on bulk before trying that tho.

If it was me, I would simply fruit the cake in a good terrarium and you will probably get as much as you would with a casing (since you only have a cake).

If you want to learn, then case it and get used to that technique because you will find pretty soon that casings are much more fun and rewarding!

  Good luck with your stuff..

.fs.

ya, i can vouch for WBS contaming very easily. I tried doing a PF to WBS transfer, and it contammed very quickly.

as far as casing only one cake.....that's sure not much substrate. but it can DEFINITELY be done and work. you just won't get much. But should be a great learning experience for you. and low risk.
go for it.

Better off trying a Dunk TEK on the cake to increase available yield.
Best of luck
