The Smoke - "My Friend Jack" (mp3)
    #2789625 - 06/13/04 09:52 AM (19 years, 9 months ago)

Someone told me that the singer of The Smoke was the father of the sing of The Strokes. Although he does look like him(guy on the left in the picture below), I don't think that that is true. I did a little research on it and couldn't find anything about it. The only thing that I did find suggests that the Strokes singer's dad has a different name than The Smoke's singer does.Good song anyway.....

The Smoke - "My Friend Jack"
1967

Here's a couple of bonus tracks for your enjoyment.

The Deep - "Color Dreams"
1967ish

John Lennon - "Nobody Told Me"
From "Milk And Honey"(released 1983)

Still hungry for more 60's acid punk you say? Here's three more. The first of which is a song that Alice Cooper covered. I have the original though, of course. Enjoy...........

The Spiders - "Don't Blow Your Mind"
1966

The Creation - "Through My Eyes"
1967

Red Crayola - "Hurricane Fighter Plane"
1967

Acid punk you say? Do you think acid punk was an inspiration to the rise of punk?

I think so, but i'm sure The Stooges, MC5 and The New York Dolls were more direct influences of the punk movement. In my opinion, acid punk or psych or psychedelic garage or whatever you want to call it is the bridge between hippy music and punk music.

I believe punks were just people who would have been hippies.

so do I. Punks just have a more agressive attitude towards the same thing. And I actually see alot of acid rock that sound like could have been an inspiration to punk.

Oh, and by the way, I fucked up. The Spiders is Alice Cooper. Read this from Fuzz, Acid And Flowers ........

DENNIS DUNAWAY bs A B
VINCENT FURNIER vcls, hrmnca A B

EP:
1 SPIDERS (PS) (Sundazed SEP 141) 1998

45s:
1(A) Why Don't You Love Me / Hitch Hike (Macot 112) 1965
2(B) Don't Blow Your Mind / No Price Tag (Santa Cruz SCR 003) 1966

From Phoenix, Arizona and originally known as the Earwigs, this band would later become the Nazz before a final name-change and global success as Alice Cooper. Consequently these pre-stardom 45s have become extremely sought-after, and not just by rabid fans of Alice - they're darn good too.

Compilation coverage has included: Don't Blow Your Mind on Garagelands, Vol. 1 (LP) and Garagelands, Vol. 1 & 2 (CD); Both Don't Blow Your Mind and No Price Tag also appear on Back From The Grave, Vol. 7 (Dble LP) and Back From The Grave, Vol. 4 (CD). Both sides of the Santa Cruz 45 are also compiled with the Nazz 45 tracks, on an EP put out by Blitz magazine in 1980.

The Sundazed retrospective EP features both sides of the Mascot 45, an unreleased instrumental take of Why Don't You Love Me and an unreleased version of Don't Blow Your Mind, featuring Michael Bruce previously of the Wildflowers.

Glen Buxton sadly passed away in October 1997.

(Max Waller / Janice Buxton / Dennis Chiesa)

Yeah, psychedelia was the punk of it's time. It was the most rebellious type of music at the time. In fact, I believe psychedelia is more punk than punk. Punks weren't a threat to the government. Psychedelia was a big threat because it glorified the use of mind expanding drugs that caused people to think for themselves. Which is exactly what the government doesn't want you to do.

I agree. From that last pic you posted I dont see the huge leap from psychedelia to the ramones, lol. The leather jackets and holes in pants are missing, but the rest is there.

Its funny how those two scenes hate on eachother though... acid is even a favourite drug with alot of punks, speed too, but that was big in the psychedelic movement too wasnt it?

And there was a new age movement that came from (and as a part of) the punk movement shortly after punk.

Oh yeah. Those drugs were favorites of both groups.

In my opinion, punks were people who would have been flower children, but they lost their way. They didn't have spirituality like the peace culture did. They had the same drugs, but didn't have the context with which to use them wisely.

Yeah, there are two completely differant types of new age. Most people havent heard of punk-new-age... but its there. It sounds like punk trying to go acid-garage. I can bring a list some new age punk bands tomorrow if your interested.

Punks general view of hippies are way to passive, punks go and protest agressively and try to actually do something.

THis is not my opinion though... hippies did alot of demonstrating and protesting.

I'd like to see a list of the bands. Are they old or new?

And by "New Age" you mean a spiritual movement based on the belief that we're all one and that "God"(us) loves us unconditionally, right?

filthysock: No need to get me any names of new wave bands. I know them and i'm not a big fan. It's basically just sterilized punk.  :smirk:

Hooty: Glad you liked my quote. I truely believe what I said. Punk appears to be more rebellious, but it's really not as rebellious as psychedelia.

For anyone else: The Lennon link has been fixed. Also, the lyrics from "My Friend Jack" are "My friend jack eats sugar lumps"(as in LSD sugar cubes).

I dont really see much resemblence between normal punk and new wave, its slow alternative music in opinion. You know the song peaches ("going down to the beach, looking for peaches" or something like that), forgot the name of the band, but its really famous, thats new wave punk... weird enough bnut true.

Do you mean "Movin' To The Country, gonna eat a lot of peaches"? That song's called "Peaches" by The Presidents Of The United States Of America.

Here's another psychedelic garage song for your ears to hear.......

The Blue Things - "Orange Rooftop Of Your Mind"
1966

No. not that song. The song is basically about cruising around and looking for peaches... as in girls. Old 70's song.

I know... the songs I've heard by Iggy Pop are new wave, for instance, but still a bad example. To put it to you this way, the song, "sex and drugs and rock and roll" is the hardest and grimyest new wave punk song I've heard!

Yeah, I mean I don't dislike all of any genre but as a whole I don't prefer new wave. Iggy Pop's 80's/post-drug addict stuff could be considered new wave but he was the godfather of punk for his work in The Stooges as well as a couple of his solo albums.

It's bad to be addicted to the drugs that Iggy was addicted to, but like many artists his work suffered greatly once he went sober. That, and he was getting older.
