when to use peroxcide?
    #2792430 - 06/14/04 02:43 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

another dumb newbie question....

does peroxcide (3%) hurt mycilium?

would it be safe to use a peroxcide mixture when:
-spray(mist) my terrarium?
-dunk my cake?
-use on my syringes during inoculation
(straight peroxcide for sterilization?)
any advice would be helpfull.

I believe you can pasteurize straw and poo with it. But not sure how well it would work for sterilizing your syringes. You'd be better off with alcohol.

Yes, you can use it to spray terrarium and dunk cakes though.

I use peroxide for many things, I use it to clean
equipment at 17%, i use it for growing at .84ml 17% h202
diluted into 500ml of water, this is the mix and ratio i use for
use on mycelium i.e as a spray, or in agar.

You can add it to the water res in a poormans pod, or humiderty chamber too, there the strength isnt so important, you can
pretty much go as strong as you like, it will also add to the avalible o2 if used like this.

I have also used it to sterilise millet, but it also bleached it

Hydrogen Peroxide will not sterilize, it will kill spores and bacteria, but not some moulds and wee little critters.

Strong h2o2 in you humidity water is good keeps down contams.

The minimum effective concentration is around .02%.

when prepairing casings I use 3% diluted 10:1 with water, spray to dress each layer, but for regular misting I think thats too strong, I use about 50:1.

For dunking I use tap water from the main (not the loft storage tank) with a little h2o2 (50:1)

H202 at high strength will kill all living cells. The 3% will not though.

hehe, h2o2 at high strength can make stuff ignite on contact, that kinda kills stuff

The left over concentration must be low enough for the mycelium to be able to break it down, even still it can slow growth.

I havent used Peroxide yet.  I feel i do not need to because i use city water straight from the tap.  I tell you i have left glasses of his water sit for weeks on end and NOTHING grows in them   My city uses a lot of chlorine, but not enough to tell by taste.

Please someone correct me if im wrong on this, but so far i have used fresh, not distilled, city water for everything, including dunking, and have had great results.  No contams, no funny smells.

Am i right that peope with city water probably dont need peroxide as the city water is self-preserving already?

Hydrogen peroxide will break down into oxygen gas and water, will it not?

2(H2O2) -> 2(H2O) + O2

People with city water generally have CLEAN water, as it is pretty thoroughly sterilized in treatment. Small amounts of fluoride ions (to improve dental health, eheh) and chlorine (to kill anything treatment left, and help it resist contam) are added to it. City water probably has a lot more metals and salts (especially metals) in it due to all the piping it runs through and how much it is recycled. Beyond that, it's relatively pure.

Then again, IANATWE (I am not a tap water expert).

i think city water is cleaner than most wells. Ive seen the process they go through, its extremely rigorous. And you also must think how many times you hear city water being contaminated, not very much huh? but i regularly hear that well water will harm residents, especially during floods.

i doubt the peroxide will break down to enough oxegen to matter, at least for me using an humidifier

Well water quality is mostly specific to the well, and generally the aquifer, it draws from. Wells that draw from springs are generally very good quality, as are those that draw from deep aquifers (a lot of these second kind must mechanically pump the water up), as their water is filtered through soil and rock and is generally too deep to support the common nasties. I think most bad well water draws from shallow ground water, or from sources contaminated by high amounts of minerals like arsenic or sulfur.

What I meant by my comment about peroxide breaking down was, if misted on the sides of a fruiting chamber or on an uncolonized casing layer, the peroxide will not accumulate, it will break down, so the strength is less of an issue... you don't have to worry as much about killing or hurting the mycelium.
