Yes, the state is perfectly happy with the telecoms being private so long as they function as arms of the state. You don’t see the issue there?

The Ecstatic said:
I don’t see the distinction.

Whether the company is public or private, censorship is employed on the internet to protect the interests of the ruling class.

Whether that’s a Putin meme being taken down in Russia, a U.S. bank blocking donations to Wikileaks, or Google/Amazon/Facebook/Twitter’s cozy alliance with the pentagon, it happens. The degree to which is happens is  dependent on the perceived threat to said interests, not on some perceived appeal to higher values of things like free speech. If the federal government told Verizon it needs to send them the IP addresses of everyone who tweets “black lives matter,” they’d fucking do it, or risk antitrust suits, crippling of (publicly funded) infrastructure, loss of federal contracts, etc.

This fantasy people have about the corporations that control the flow of information being good because they are separate from the state, and therefore more amenable to free speech, are fooling themselves. There is no separation.

To say we are operating under some fundamentally different dragnet than folks in Russia is missing the point. If anything, ours is far more sophisticated.

The_Ecstatic has such a coherent, concise, perfect way of compressing all of the scattered thoughts of my fractured mind, into one perfect, straight to the point post, or two.

Well fucking said bro!

Yall making this shit about censoring internet trolls is flabbergasting to me. That's NOT my problem. I don't have any problem with Enlil banning me for telling some loser about himself, in an inappropriate way!

I really do try to walk the line (as close as I possibly can), and I only cross it when I have to ;-)

They didn't just outlaw fake news ....

Quote:

In 2019 Russia introduced new regulation commonly called "fake news law" which criminalizes publications containing "unreliable" information" as well as opinions that show "disrespect for society, government, state symbols, the constitution and government institutions".

As of 2022, Russia ranked 155 out of 180 countries in the Press Freedom Index compiled by Reporters Without Borders.[1] In the 2017 Freedom House Freedom of the Press report Russia scored 83 (100 being the worst), mostly because of new laws introduced in 2014 that further extended the state control over mass media

Why do you gotta bring Russia into EVERYTHING!?!

If I condemn Hitler for genocide, will you then point to Stalin, in his defense? lmao

You'll have to explain.

You never do, but let's see if you can do it this time...

There is no need for a private company to comply, they do it because they want to, and they own the resources, and they own the revenue, and they get to do what they want as long as it complies with the laws.

Ah I see so companies like Facebook and Twitter were arms of the state when trump and republicans spent four years threatening to regulate or shut them down and they continued doing what they do. Seems like they really don’t care what the current government thinks.

Nobody ever got on the internet with some promise of anonymity. The entire thing is based on using you. If you think anonymity is a part of the deal you are wrong too. I am not saying we shouldn't have that, but that was never in the script, not in the 40 years of it existing. If you want never ending free speech then go find a usenet site and pay the $8 a year and say whatever batshit crazy stuff you want. Just make sure your opsec is good. Otherwise you are asking for it when that batshit crazy comes down on you. These options exist very widely even if many aren't aware.

I’m not asking for that. I’m just pointing out that the Ministry of Truth is the same whether you’re in Oceania or Eurasia.

To say we are operating under some fundamentally different dragnet than folks in Russia is missing the point. If anything, ours is far more sophisticated.

I wrote a big response to this then decided to take a nap and never hit post.

Anyway, that still isn't how the internet works. The internet is a dragnet defacto. It records everything you do because you are downloading other people's stuff. That is the entire internet. Russia, China, my personal website, everybody can see you. Unless you have protections, but the vast majority do not.

That way, since his posts are irrefutable... We can all FINALLY get on the same page, and do as this thread was intended... Come up with a solution that works!

You love your CIA funded organizations.

Still more.

But I guess being tricked by your own Government means we have more freedoms here, or something like that, amirite?

Yes Russia has such great press freedom that entire organizations have left the country for fear of saying something that will get their reporters arrested
