would it be possible to put something like rain-x or wax on the bottom (inside) of the plexiglass cover to avoid water condensating and dripping onto the cakes? figure then you don't have to drain the water off every so often...

Why are you getting so much water?

Just take a piece of cardboard and cut to size. Line with plastic.

Just put some water around the lid and cover w/ saran wrap. It should fit perfectly if it's a 10gal but you can get bigger size saran wrap(or those huge saran wrap rolls that they wrap palates of boxes in in stores). Don't bother w/ the wax.

Pet store sell removable tops. They're a wire grate, but you can attach you plexiglass to it with the silicone.

I'm not getting any water, yet. i'm just setting up the aquarium and plan to put perlite in the bottom to maintain humidity. i've read that water can collect on the lid and to be sure to drain it off every so often so it doesn't end up dripping back onto the cakes. also since i want to see if i can keep the humidity up without having to spray, i figured it'd be best to seal it pretty good so the moisture isn't escaping. :| i guess i'm going to cut the plexi to fit on the inner lip and test it out with perlite and water and give it a few days test to see if the levels stay correct. if so i guess i won't worry too much about sealing it up, eh? :D

You have to sturdy the plexi glass or it warps. Anything thinner then 3/8" thick will warp even if sturdied. I recommend 1/2" plexi glass.
My cat would cut strips of wood and drill holes in the plexi glass and attach the wood frame around it. Then seal the screw holes with silicone rubber cement. The seal was damn near airtight.. as good as you need it. If you dont sturdy it with wood or something similiar it will warp.

That will work just fine. Don`t trust a cheap hygrometer.
