Main Entry: phenol Pronunciation: 'fE-"nOl, -"nol, fi-' Function: noun Etymology: International Scientific Vocabulary phen- + 3-ol 1 : a corrosive poisonous crystalline acidic compound C6H5OH present in coal tar and wood tar that in dilute solution is used as a disinfectant 2 : any of various acidic compounds analogous to phenol and regarded as hydroxyl derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons Used in a sentence: I was standing at a railway station, waiting for a friend, and a Union Pacific freight train passed through. It was a long freight train, and like many that run through these parts was comprised mostly of flat cars piled high with giant fresh cut logs. I'm standing about twenty feet away, watching these giant logs pass by, attempting to braille the meaning of all this sheer mass with my feet, as the ground trembles and shakes beneath all this sheer industrial weight rolling by to the unsyncopated clammer of a noise comprised of a deafening rumble, interspersed with the occasional screech and whine of grinding metal under stress, and I notice the truly unique and important sight in all this -- the vision; the important symbol; the thing that will stick with me like the old gum on the bottom of a leather-soled shoe on a hot day... Towards the end of the train, two black tank cars passed by. They were each shaped like what I image the outside of the belly of the whale would have looked like, if one could have crawled outside of the belly, but still remained somewhere inside the whale, and taken a quick look back. However, what was odd about these cars, and would affix them to my singular consciousness, was the particular shade of black that they were: an extremely matte black. In fact, so matte black, as to absorb all light. As if covered in the soot of the ages; the very essence of fashionable anthracite gray; like a pair of stealth vampire apparitions gliding down the rails of history -- on who's side was stenciled in an impossibly bright white paint: "Molten Phenol!"

Ok, here's the real goods! I had to sort of stitch this definition together on my own, so it may not be up to Merriam Webster's standards, but the gist of it is here. It's one of my favorite words, as it represents a concept in art which has been very near and dear to me over the years, and a concept which I think finds some really good traction when used elsewhere. Word: Pentimenti Etymolgy: From Italian pentimento (repentance), from pentire (to repent), from Latin paenitere (to regret). Meaning: A ghost image. Something painted out of a picture by an artist which later becomes visible again. Often ascribed to a later accidental revealing of hidden structure or of change in direction/design on the artist's part. However, in much Modern Art, with its emphasis on process, there is often inconsequential, or intentional, pentimenti, such as in the works of Willem de Kooning, or Richard Diebenkorn. Although, primarily an art term, it can also be applied in other fields with often most excellent results. Examples might include: ideological-pentimenti, semiotic-pentimenti, cultural-pentimenti, et cetera. Here it is used in a sentence, in a non-art sense, and used to emphasize a perceived change in direction, and a dichotomy between present and past. Although, the narrator of this little piece may not be on the most stable of ground to make such judgments... After weeks in the library, tirelessly scanning the microfilm and old videos of his past speeches and deeds, his ideological pentimenti began to overtake my internalized construction of him, and was much at odds to the well-crafted public personae being packaged and sold to us on the television. This dichotomy began to fuel a schism in mind mind, as if a deep semiotic wedge was being hammered between the two hemispheres of my cerebral lobes -- each lobe containing a different construction of him, and each lobe in violent opposition with the other -- a wide gap was forming, and the headaches were getting worse. The latest pills from Doctor Jordon were not working, and I wasn't sure he could be trusted anymore, anyway. Especially, since that one night, when I emptied all the pills out of all the bottles, and spread them out across the living room floor; end to end; top to bottom; arranged in a huge matrix; by order of the numbers on each pill, and by their colors, in concert with the messages coming from the television. I can't even recount what I saw, when I was done, in that giant rasterization of pharmacological-dystopia -- having necessarily blotted it out of my mind, as a trauma survival tactic -- but it wasn't good. The voices were piling up, and most of them said that he was one of them. Not only he, but the other he as well. In fact, they both were part of them. Something needed to be done. Action must be taken... PS: My mind's in a weird writing place this morning. It must have been the peyote the other night...
