Yea these are just spores on a slide.
I couldn't get a good view of an agar wedge I cut and put on a slide either but I did manage to get a good look at hyphae on an agar plate.
Also looking at a thin slice of some fresh mushroom gills was cool. Could see spores in there besides the actual tissue up close. Only issue with the gills is that some parts were in focus and some not, but I looked into it and this is normal, there's special techniques for getting it just right, or taking several snapshots of each part in focus.
Haven't had a proper chance to play with it yet so any improvements and I'll let you know!

Yeah please do keep me posted. I have seen one or two people post photos of mycelium coming out of spores early on in the germination process, which I don't think I could capture on my scope. I noticed the same thing as you in terms of areas being out of focus when looking at certain things and it makes sense because the focal window is SO narrow that you can really only see a razor-thin plane at any single moment. I have found that this makes looking at mycelium very challenging because we think of mycelium as spreading out on a flat plane but it's really more like if you took a bowl of spaghetti and used a laser to slice through it, then looked at the sliced part. There are things running in every which direction!

I got a $10 roasting pan off of Craigslist. Going to try some oven pasteurization. It smells like a sauna, not too shabby

Did you have many damaged. I got a 500 pack from Amazon and at least 1/4 of the sleeves were damaged.

This happens to me with cheaper petris. Sometimes it's worth it cause of the price and usually it's only 1 dish in the sleeves that are damaged. Or I could pay 3x the price for better quality.

I'd be grumpy about that and seeking some refund

I’m thinking I could ultimately save some cash and time in the long run if I bought about 20 glass plates and then a single box of 60 disposable ones for the year. Rotate through the glass ones, then use a disposable for longer term storage when necessary.
But glass Petris are pricey. So probably for a while I’m just gonna use disposable ones.

Officially an empty nester (...again). So now I can set up a lab instead of hauling everything from the garage to the kitchen table and back. Just a start so far, but hoping it means that I can be a lot more productive going forward.
Plan to split the weekend between scouring and setting up the room and doing some actual cult.

So this is just an idea I haven't tested it yet. But those of us in older houses, less control over house air particulate load. I have a theory that contams and dust really get up under the threads of jars and get blown into jars while working in front the flowhood and lifting lids. So I'm thinking of trying these to cover the metal band ring glass gap so they come out of the cooker and remain sterile up under there till you can noc em up
6 Pcs Black Silicone Elastic Bands https://a.co/d/4Qdy75R
They stretch, come in different diameters, 1" width should be sufficient, thin enough to tight fit the contours, and very heat resistant.

I pulled the trigger on it found this listing they're cheap, returnable, you get 30 of them the size should fit nice and tightly.

This will seal that underband area keeping it sterile or at least a million times cleaner I can use them on my jar no pours, masters, and g2g receivers. Should really help I think.

Should work pretty good. You can always put the beads in womens nylon booties tied in knots too.

Oooo my silicone bands just got delivered. They fit perfectly! A little tight but over time they should stretch and loosen a little from pressure cooking and be great! Sterile underband!
