Using heating cable in terratorium ?
    #2791833 - 06/14/04 10:53 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Hi I have one of these cables:

I was wondering if they can be used to heat up a terratorium since I have them in a too cold room. I first thought about having the cables in the bottom casing layer. But wonder if it might be better to use a 1-1.5 inch layer at the bottom of my fishtank and have this cable in water and perlitte and a screen or something to hold other containers above this so the cable is always wet and it will also help with humidity. would this be a good idea? or am I missing something here. This is my second time growing mushrooms so ideas and suggestions are welcome.

oh I have two other questions as well:

1. Why is peroxide needet in a incubator?

2. On the fishtank I have a air pump with filter that pumps in air but what about the exhaust, do you need to put filters there too? is the risk of contamnation big? I was thinking maybe put cotton in the holes like I did on the jar lids.

That cable looks like it would be fine, it originally is a fish tank heater right? Your terrarium does not need to be more than 73-74 degrees, so room temperature should be fine for it unless the room is quite cold, just watch your temps thought and make sure that heater isn't getting too warm.

As far as the air pump goes, you only need a filter on one side or the other, but it can never hurt to have it on both.

yes it is a fish tank heater.
the room is often under 70.

Do you know if its smart to have them in direct contact with the casing? or if these cables needs to be under water to work correct or something?

i would be worried that a cable such as that might get a bit too hot for mushie cultivation
get an electric thermometer that can record peaks
and monitor it
anything in the upper 80s or 90s would be too hot
also are you sure it is safe to submerge that kind of cable?
if you told us what the cable was originally used for it might help
as far as peroxide in an incubator, i don't understand your question...
but peroxide is sometimes used to help ensure sterility, maybe you heard about someone cleaning their incubator with peroxide? some people put peroxide in the water if they are using a tub in tub
to prevent bacterial growth, but you don't specifically need it...

I wouldn't place the heater in direct contact with the casing, as that would create warm spots it them...
And more than likely, the heater needs to be underwater, so probably I would put an inch and a half or so of water into the tank, and then use some carefully bent wire mesh that will hold the casings up and out of the water.
What would be ideal is to use the rocks that you place in the bottoms of fishtank, put an inch of water in the tank with the heater, and add rocks until the water level is just above (like half a centimeter)the rocks level. Place some cloth (or a cloth like plastic or something) over the rocks and then place an inch of perlite... That would take a lot of space up in the tank, but it would provide an excellent source of heat and humidity IMO.
