Few horse stables mushrooms
    #2791599 - 06/14/04 05:01 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I didn't have time to pick them and check the species accurately as I was on a school trip with my kids, but I had few seconds to make these photos:

This is probably Panaeolus subalteatus:

And this... Psilocybe merdaria (or maybe semiglobata?)

I just found that Panaolus subalteatus is an obsolete name - it's now called Panaeolus cinctulus. Crazy mycologists continiously change names just to make things more complicated.

According to the search engines it is still Panaeolus subbalteatus which means all veriagated and somewhat belted.

HEre are just 20 of a few dozen sites which refer to it as everything from panaeolus antillarum to Panaeolus semiovatus, to Panaeolus fimicola, to panaeolus sphinctrinus and also to Panaeolus campanulatus to name a few.

IT , according to Ewald Gerhardt who rewrote the genusB Ppanaeolus is still P. subbalteatus.

In fact according to Bolton it is a seaparate species and here is the note on it from Bolton:
Quote:

Panaeolus cinctulus (Bolton) Sacc.
Bolbitiaceae, Agaricales, Agaricomycetidae, Basidiomycetes, Basidiomycota
Database: British Fungi (BMS).htm, Cat No: 170056, Ref No: 147
Date: 05/07/2003, Site Name: Little Paxton Pits
Map: TL196629, County/State: Hunts. (31)
Substrate: soil and herbivore dung, Habitat: neutral grassland
Finder: M. Parslow, Identifier: M. Parslow

XXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXX

And to clarify it even more, the Panaeolus cinctulus is just a synonym for panaeolus subbalteatus as was panaeolus venenosus and panaeolus rufus and several others. IT h has not been changed tot ghe name you are suggesting.

That would be Panaeolus separatus you are referring, not P. separtus. However that is not Panaeolus separatusbut is as the poster of the thread said above.

I \justr posted Panaeolus separatus images here fromt he riding stable less than two weeks ago. Look for them

So I got this explanation about Panaeolus cinctulus:

Panaeolus cinctulus has a chronologic priority over P. subalteatus because it was first described as Agaricus cinctulus by Bolton in 1791 which was long before Agaricus subbalteatus by Berk. & Broome in 1861.
It was later found that these two names are synonimus and the mushroom was placed in genus Panaeolus.

So the currently valid name is: Panaeolus cinctulus (Bolton) Sacc. 1887
and all others are obsolete.

In simple words... the name changed when mycologists decided that cinctulus and subalteatus are just different names for the same mushroom and at that moment the older one got the priority.
