Got to say i disagree man, knowing even the bare minimum about mycology will open your eyes to what mushrooms actually are.
Picking a shroom out the ground is the equivalent of picking an apple off a tree.
The mycelium is the tree in this instance, it lives as a perennial underground and, given the right conditions, will proliferate outwards of its own volition.
The spores the shroom releases is responsible for propagating new patches. All you are doing when picking is harvesting the 'fruit'. If you pick large flatter caps the spores are for the most part gone at this point.

Like any harvest some years crops will fail other times they will prosper.

Years ago , used to find goldmine fields, short grass, easy to see and pick liberty caps in the thousands; then the next year nothing - 10 if lucky.

Despite what people will say about harvesting large quantities, ripping up from the root, in a newly discovered field - they do not grow back ! I can say this about 20 fields completely dead the very next year....it cant be a coincidence.

This question has been up so many times now. The main reason for "goldmine fields" occurring in the first place is the presence
of nutrients available to the fungus i.e. the mycelium. When the nutrients are spent, the mycelium will dwindle and so will the
amount of fruiting bodies. In fact, when picking sufficient amounts of mushrooms you are doing them a favour, since you will
unwittingly become a carrier of spores far beyond their natural ability to spread.

Another thing to remember is that the times you hit those "goldmines", luck and timing play important roles since people
generally can only make assumptions regarding when a certain field will be plentiful. There are no guarantees that the nearly
empty spot you visited hadn't been picked clean a few days prior. It might have been someone else's turn to get lucky.

These things are, as far as I'm concerned, good reasons for calling it hunting and not gathering or harvesting.

Also the weather plays a lot in my experience, always had good luck when we have had rain for a few days previously and the temps over night have been 2-10c. I've not bothered to go hunting for the last 3 weeks as conditions have been rubbish. Tuesday looks like it should be good in my area.

Hi everyone this is my first post.

I am based in the south east of England and have only been hunting the last two weekends without much success.

Firstly can anyone identify this? (pic attached hopefully)

I’ve been searching in the surrey hills area, I’ve been told they are around this area I’m just wondering if I’ve left it too late or too early in the season.

Total newbie so any advice or directions would be appreciated.

Thanks
T

Hey buddy,

That looks to me like the closest lookalike around, a dewdrop mottlegill - Panaeolus acuminatus. Absence of any nipple and the hairy straight stem... but you're so close! Keep trying.

Not liberty caps I'm afraid

This season has been really bad for them in the south east so don't worry that you haven't succeeded. Keep a look out for good spots and try again next year. Last year was a bumper year - one field near me fruited several thousand over the season. They are not as common in south east england - the west and north are better, but you can still find good spots occasionally. Generally mid-November is when the season slows to a halt but given the mild weather of the past few weeks you may still find an occasional cluster.
Look for old grassland. Particularly grazed pastures and bear in mind if the grass is long they are difficult to see. I find they have a preference for steep sloping fields. Hope that helps

Nice haul! Was that a glut in one field or traversing through many spots?

Found these today in coastal Flanders, Belgium. So I guess people should still be able to find them in the UK South-East, which is just across the Channel from where I found these.

The difference with picking in october, is the damn cold though. Had to leave early as my fingers were numb and my feet cold and wet. When I go back I'll take a pair of scissors to pick them, instead of with my hands.

Yeah thats cool, to disagree. I 'll stick to the belief based on my own experience that fields with huge abundance of liberty caps if picked clean, won't produce anything the next year. If left untouched and dropping spores they obviously seem to produce huge amounts year on year until that year they get found and cleaned out. As for others suggesting 20+ fields beaten to it everytime for 25 + years, i highly doubt...They dont even produce one anymore, totally dead....but yeah theres a lot of factors, interesting read...cheers

So ive had a little read through the last few pages, and can’t find any reference to people’s experience in Wales 🏴 this year?

I can’t work it out. I had some reasonable results about a month, maybe 6 weeks ago - to be honest I didn’t think the weather was all that right at the time. A bit too warm. But I had small success in my usual spot that was brilliant last year (South Wales, around Newport) then I had an amazing time up in the south Brecon Beacons while walking without going there to pick in the first place.

Now I’ve just come back from a day walking around parts of the south valleys (Caerphilly ways) in what from I can tell is perfect recent conditions - and literally didn’t find one. Went to 4 different places, some with sheep, some with cows, all from what I am aware about perfect for them - and didn’t find one sausage (or a mushroom).

Just wanted to ask if there are any Welsh pickers out there who have had any success in the last week or so? I’m considering a big drive up to the Brecons tomorrow to try and get one more day of picking in, but would love to hear if anyone has had any luck around Wales in the last week or so? Worried I’ll make a big day trip out of it and come back empty handed! Will just be myself in the rain, which is fine…but kind of limits the “oh well, I didn’t find any mushrooms but at least I had a nice walk” side of things :p

The rain has been torrential this last week - is that too much maybe?

Hi Lads,

New to this site, joined today. I've recently been researching about liberty  aps and I've gone on the hunt a few times now. Not finding anything. Today I think I've found one, just want some of you, more XP lads to see the pics and give me advice if it's a liberty cap or not.

Any help will be appreciated. 💪

Been hunting for new spots around south wales recently, i do have one small spot that has been producing but slowing down, possibly due to me over picking. All around that spot are perfect conditions, but there's nothing..very strange.

I've left the one spot for over week, so will report back later this week.

Like you mentioned a lot of the mountains/hills in south wales are so waterlogged due to mad heavy rain over the past few weeks, we are now looking at a drier and colder spell for the next week...so hopefully things could change.

Looks legit to me. Leave it to dry for a bit, should turn to light beige in colour if it is.

Well folks, 2 queries:

just wondering if many of you have found them actually inside clumps of rushes....not visible from the outside but only visible by pulling apart the clump of rushes?
Asking because I had that experience today but unfortunately the ones buried inside the clump were black and past their best so I left them to disperse their spores.

I know its common knowledge that they are mainly found on well grazed ground + shortish grass but I'm wondering if that is just because they are easily spotted in these habitats and that maybe they are also just as abundant in long rank grasses but just much more difficult to find ?

All the best

Only for the following year? Or have you had a small patch grow there every season since?
