premade substrates or homemade...which is better?
    #2791541 - 06/14/04 03:55 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

The premade sterilized substrates from certain sites sound very good an definitely will make it a whole lot easier...and save alot of time when cultivating...but are they really worth buying ?..and is it safe to order them ..because its legal to sell spores but if your selling premade substrate cakes then obviously you plan on cultivating ..and thats illegal..i dont know if im over reacting but any input would be appreciated..thankyou to all who can help

I had a really bad experience with 48 jars I received pre-made. I too was trying to speed the process, and save work. As A result. The substrate was too dry only 2 days after recieving them. As a result I spent almost a month of waiting and lots of time getting them innoculated. Zilch, Nada, Zip happened. I went back to square one made my own substrate(using the 48 jars that I could have bought at any Wal-Mart for only a few dollars, did my home work, made my own glove box. All for far less than I spent at the supplier.
And get this: I got visible results in 2 days.
If you "must" do it that way at least make sure the supplier is near you so shipping time doesn't cause problems. I would think that would be even more of a problem as outside temperatures rise in the Summer.
Best of luck

People seem to be very pleased with the pre-sterilized MycoBag(TM) products sold through Sporeworks and MycoBag.com.

They are a bargain if you are looking for prepared substrate mixtures that are not simply grain flours and vermiculite. Utilizing the bag container means you can save on the high shipping costs usually associated with shipping jars. These MycoBags can give you the flexibility to grow on straw based, grain based (whole grains), and wood based substrates without having to invest in sterility equipment. Lots of positive success stories with MycoBag products, just do a search on here and you'll see.

Pre-made obviously save time, but IMO, home made is more rewarding. (not meaning from a yeild point of view, but from a satisfaction point of view)

Well my take on the whole jar situation is basic. If there a vendor here you can trust them.

I've ordered from mike o's twice and those jars are perfect! I'm on the opposite coast as mike's and no problems have been incountered with his jars. I'd used them again and again.
