Cant figure out shroom identity..
    #2791249 - 06/14/04 12:39 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Well my friend and I went out to this cow field today and on the outskirts of it we found hundreds (and i mean hundreds) of these mushrooms that look alot like Cubensis but didnt quite fit the profile. I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me identify them..

First of all there is no manure around and they are growing near big oak trees on fallen decayed branches and in the tall grass near them.
They have caps almost identical to Cubensis and have a 2-3 inch pure white stem that is a tad darker near the base. The gills are seemingly white but have shades of brown. When i got a few home, i took a spore print and it came out mainly brown with very small hints of a shade of purple. They arent as meaty at Cubensis but close.
I dont know if this info will help but there were found in central Georgia outside of atlanta near athens and we had heavy rain for about 3 straight days before this sunny one.

If anyone has any info on what these might be please feel free to share it such as wether there are any poisonous look alikes i should know about i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

also they do not bruise any color or have any distinct smell about them. The stem is hollow and when the mushroom dries, the cap and gills become a darker shade of light brown and the stem takes on a silvery white.
Hope that helps, wish i had a camera...

I know i dont have a pic so i am trying to give as many details as possible. Here are a few more

The center of the caps are a darker shade of light brown than the edges, like the logo pic of mushrooms in the top left corner of this site. In fact those are the CLOSEST looking mushrooms to the ones i found.
-They grow in huge clusters as well as by their lonesome.
-They seem to fruit more readily on a decayed branch then in dead leaves.
-When they are small they appear a darker light brown and get lighter with age.

Thats about everything so ill leave that actual identification up to the experts here.

Peace

No bruising-- not active. No clue what though. Look around in the patches and you will probably be suprised to see that there are actives in the pasture scattered about the inactive questionables- it will suprise you. This is like the field-o-pans effect where you find copes unexpectedly amongst the rubble of unuseable crap. Look hard- at everything. I bet there are Georgia shroomers who can dig this post- hang tight.

A couple of the ones in the mushroom guide on this site that looked like the ones i found said that they dont bruise blue and are active.
Are there ANY possible poisonous ones that fit the description I gave?

or you could actually do some research and learn how to ID by other characteristics, since bluing on its own is pretty much useless in identification  ...

I have no experience with the mushrooms down in GA, but brown print, growth in big clusters on wood/grass and having the general shape of cubies makes them sound like Agrocybe praecox or something similar, that's just a guess based on things I've seen up here though.

If you don't know what they are, yes they're possibly poisonous.  If you're only wondering if they're active, they're not.

I was just joking about the bruising blue thing, I know there are poionous mushrooms that bruise blue as well but i wasnt going to rely on that as proof of edibility.

Thank you for the help though, i greatly appreciate it.

There is only one active mushroom that doesn't bruise blue, and some species that DO bruise blue are poisonous. Take a spore print, as always.

No, there's about 3 active mushrooms that I can think of which don't always bruise blue.
