for those that trip for personal insight...

so ive done mushrooms about 8 or 9 times, so im somewhat experienced, but what ive never really had a trip where ive learned much about myself that i didnt already know (besides the first time i tripped). every time i trip its usually just for fun, or i just get caught up in just tripping and wandering around and such.
so for those that actually gain insight from trips - when does it usually happen for you? does it happen when youre tripping with a friend listening to music, having a conversation, wandering around, etc? or do you have to actually sit yourself down and start thinking?
sounds like a sort of abstract question, but hopefully you all can make some sense of it...

It has happened to me when I lay down quietly and don't converse much with others. Many times personally, these insights are preceeded by difficult points in the trip. If I make a successful re-entry, the "insights" are only magnified. During the trip I rarely see them as insights, since the integration process in the weeks afterward is what makes them more clear and understandable to me.

IMO, taking psychedelics won't really help you gain insight into yourself. You are far to complicated to be sure that you have learned anything just by taking a drug.

What I find does happen though, is that "issues" or "insights" (whatever you want to call them) are brought to the surface to be confronted and acknowledged during a trip. Such as, it may be something you've always known, but just have forgotten, denied, put aside, not realized, etc.
So they're not as much brand new "insights," as they are ideas or concepts that you've always had that are brought to the surface of your consciousness during a psychedelic experience.
Or that's how it is for me, anyway.

Mushrooms have never told me anything, but they have shown me things I already know. Mushrooms stop the little voice in my head and let me look at my current life from the outside. Usually I'll look at how I'm living and how I want to be living and think about what I need to do to live the life I want to live. I believe mushrooms have awakened a lot of the thoughts I had about my life as a child; mainly what kind of person I'd like to grow up as. Psychedelics help me stay true to myself.
The thoughts I had about life before I was thrown into the real world, before I knew of all the complications that are entailed with adult life. I believe that in a sense, this is my true self trying to get through my ego, so I let it through.
Like ellemyshshade said I think the most important part about introspective trips is integrating what you were shown back into your every day life. I've seen friends of mine have these great thoughts about their life and how they are going to make them better, but the next day they are back in society participating in the same ego games. The day after I trip I like to spend hours thinking about my trip and what I was shown.
Vats, you might want to try tripping alone if you're looking for an introspective trip. Mentally prepare for the trip at least a week before. Ask yourself what you want to address and have some questions in your mind to ponder. Don't expect to just eat some mushrooms and have a spirtual trip, it takes some work.

Bingo! When I'm facing a difficult time in my life, I eat a bigger dose, sit down, and I just think. I like having a tape recorder and talking to myself because I feel that it's things i've always known but wasn't capable of understanding or admitting to myself.
Then, to finalize your insights, try to have a conversation with someone close to you about what you thought about, what you intend to do, and what you've learned.
What a wonderful substance, why oh why is it illegal?!?!?!

What's the most you've taken? My first trip didn't lead to much insight, but when I took 5 dried grams, I finally understand what Jim Morrison meant by "Break on through to the other side."

lie down in a comfortable position.....and close your eyes(looking within) fuck the music, chill in silence so you can hear your heart.
you really dont think these insights out, but rather quiet the mind and feel them, they come as feelings not thoughts(atleast that is how i describe it) then after i feel the deep understanding i can think from there about what i just realized, really cool shit....because you can just keep going and going with it. knowledge is infinite, once you find an answer it brings more questions...and when they are figured out, it makes you wonder and question further, and it never ends. im humbled to think about it.
but hey man, dont expect to realize some of the shit others have realized, becuase everyone is on their own level of understanding/soul development, so what you do not understand now, can be understood later when u are ready to. but the things about yourself as far as problems in life can be understood in a more positive way, doesnt matter where your at spiritually to look at your own lifes situation. what i was rambling about was truth of who you are and what life itself for all of us is all about....deeper than just reflecting on personal issues....this comes after you break through the issues holding you back from this wisdom that lies within.
its pretty liberating to realize who/what god is, and that you are god.

about 3-3.5 dried g (it was eyeballed).i know thats considered low-dose for most people on these boards, but i guess the reason i never really take more than that is just because even though ive never had a "bad trip" as in having frightening thoughts, visuals, etc, i have gotten overwhelmed by the intensity of the high.
maybe im sensitive to psilocybin, or maybe im just a pussy.

I cant speak from experience because I have never taken a high dose. From everything I have researched, and from the people I have spoken to, a high dose seems to be essential if you want to achieve what you are looking for. I remember listening to some Mp3's of Mckenna speaking and he speaks from experience. He even says that 3 grams and such is merely dabbling into it. High dose seems to be key.

I think McKenna was talking about insight into the universe and existence as a whole, not personal insight. IME, it becomes almost impossible to think of anything else but the universe and existence on high doses.

You've also got to remember that McKenna was a total fucking burnout. I mean, really. That man did too many drugs.

I did 3.5g weighed of nice, potent home-grown shrooms (Creeper and SA) and experienced a high l4 trip that peaked into l5 at times. I personally don't think that "heroic doses" of 5+ are necessary for insight or for reality-reodering trips. But then, maybe I'm just a lightweight.

No offense, but it's more likely the latter. Not that there isn't legitimately something to fear, but I think your fear is what's holding you down. You have to just go with the flow. Let the trip take you wherever it goes. Don't fight it. That's how you cope with a level 5 trip. Oh ya, and on a level 5, if you feel your ego(your sense of self) slipping away, don't fight that either. Just let it happen.
BTW, I somehow have your number saved on my cell phone, yet I don't remember you giving it to me. Wierd.

Another thing occurred to me: Do you trip alone or in groups? I find that I get my most insightful trips when I'm by myself.

i usually trip in small groups, although my most successful (meaning they just generally went well) trips have been with one or two people.
and yes i agree, it probably is the latter. but theres really nothing thats gonna get me over it except doing it.
maybe spud gave you my number when i was in ca last month?
