subaeruginosa advice?

So i got a healthy sub culture from a print and made it into LI that I used to inoculate a couple grain jars. Grain jars look great so far and should be fully colonized in a few days. Ive never worked with subs before and was just looking for some advice on what to do next. I was thinking of transferring the jars to sterilized bags of pine shavings from the pet store then once they’re colonized using those to spawn to some beds of pine wood chips when they’re ready. I read they like pine but is there something better to use? i have a buddy that runs an arbor business so i have access to lots of wood chips especially pine.

I have a Subaeruginosa print on the way that I will be working with.
I read that they can grow on pine but hardwood, especially eucalyptus, is preferred. If your arborist friend can get you both, I'd run a side by side comparison to see what works best.
Better than wood shavings is wood pellets. It's basically compressed sawdust and you usually see them for home heating in woodstoves. They come in hardwood and softwood varieties. You can also find BBQ smoking chips for larger wood pieces.

Hi there.
Iv been growing Mushrooms like shiitake and oyster on hardwood, straw, and a few other things.
Then I decided to grow some MM. I just started growing some GT, Mexicana P. Cub, and BMs all on the same substrate with the only addition of some cow manure.
So far my Mexicana P. Cub had fruited Nicely, the others have not pinned yet but have fully colonized the substrate.
I got hardwood sawdust in bulk but you can use the hardwood smoking pellets if you can get ahold of sawdust.

I have 2 bags of Suba, they are on:
210g hard/soft fuel pellets (soaked and squeezed) 3C straw 1C soil from a bag 1/4 Wpoo 1 Tbsp gypsum 1 2/3 C Water
Probably going to a trashcan FC this weekend, they'll get topped with cacti soil and a handful of pine bedding.

Have you seen that much of a difference in performance if it’s soft vs hardwood? And are all the other ingredients your throwing in aside from the sawdust just experimental?

I've tried different substrates and for the most part, it seems like woodies will eat all kinds of things. For subs, they devoured this mix! I recently buried them in trashcan hoping for luck this fall. I can offer you these pics if it'd help.

I've not tried it but I'd guess Master Mix would work well. The fuel pellets I have are a mix of hard and soft wood, I haven't tried just one or the other.

If planting them outside I really do not like sawdust. I know I’ve talked about how great it is in the past, but after seeing so many of the beds made with sawdust get nasty rots that starts at the blocks, and how poorly it works as a stepping stone to larger chips I hate using it. I just spawned some subs to poor man’s masters mix the other day and I hate it, but I needed to just use the stuff up and I didn’t have any gourmets. Grain to fermented, boiled or sterilized chips or straight to bagged mulch right out the bag all the way. I’ve got a lot of patches I’ve made with sawdust, but it really doesn’t perform all that well for this kind of thing.

Also I couldn’t say that subs have any more preference or tolerance for pine compared to cyans, allenii, or ovoid. I got a load of pine chips last fall and added it to my patches when they were done fruiting and azzies were first to colonize it, and the subs hadn’t got into any of the pine till the last few weeks, it really seems to be taking to it now tho, no more than the ovoids and cyans are taking to it. I don’t know, maybe it had to cure over the summer heat to evaporate some of the oils or some dumb theory like that.

My mycelium is doing well on alder smoking chips. I have a huge amount of Douglas fir chips in my area that I'd like to try to feed them.

Do you only use wood chips? or is it a mix of chips and a bit of sawdust? and do u just hydrate the mulch right out of bag to use in an outdoor bed?

Mine are doing OK on hardwood chips, but they are tearing through beech wood and bark mulch straight from the bag

It's moist the way it comes
ETA: You should really read through the Official Woodlovers Thread. Mountains of info! In there I posted that I put my subs outside today
