Can I get a gut-check for a practical research project?
    #27907041 - 08/17/22 04:34 PM (1 year, 5 months ago)

I’m a brewer, raise hops and grapes in the Hudson Valley, and I’m also an amateur “mycologist”. The invasive pest Spotted Lanternfly has  just shown up on our doorstep. This thing has devastated vineyards and hops in Pennsylvania, but there are few synthetic or natural controls. Naturally occurring infections of a cordyceps-like fungus called Beauveria bassiana have been discovered to reduce some Lanternfly populations by around 50%

So here’s what I’m looking for in terms of gut-check advice: is it unreasonable for me to plan a project where I locate insect carcasses that have been successfully infested with B bassiana, try to isolate and scale up the spores, apply to the grapes, then repeat to build up a strain that is most effective in controlling the lantern flies? How hard could that be? (/sarcasm/). Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

No need to go through all of that trouble, several beauveria bassiana based insecticides already exist.

Using Beauveria Bassiana for Insect Management

I don't know how effective it is but I believe amazon even sells it.

Tradd Cotter has talked about exactly that in one of his webinars. Might be this one:
