Our First Grow Journal - Jumping in with Bottle Tek!
    #27902542 - 08/13/22 11:40 PM (2 years, 5 months ago)

Hi everyone! Long time lurker, first time posting (in/about cultivation)! My partner and I just started our first grow and wanted to share as we go.

We’ve cleared out one of our closets to dedicate to our shroomies. It stays around 79–81° F (of course, it’s August, so that’s probably the warmest it will get) and 35% humidity--but we plan to keep the monotub around 95% (?). We’ve hung a 6500K LED (I know… fluorescent would probably be better, but we’re going to see how the LED does) light over where the monotub will go. I’ll post pictures when we actually have something set up in it. 😉

We are using MudaFuka’s Bottle Tek with 14 quart-sized Ziplocs that will fruit in a monotub (without a liner and using Pastywhyte’s Easy Micropore Mono Tek). We are basically using the coir-based recipe, though we’ve simplified it a bit: rye berries, coir, verm. (Hopefully it’s not *too* simple!)

We prepped the grain/substrate mix (using a mix of MudaFuka’s tek and Spitball’s Quick Rye Prep Tek) and sterilized the bottles in our (Presto 23 qt) PC today! We are inoculating tomorrow. We definitely plan to do agar/LC/etc. eventually but are just starting with MSSs for now. Going to do five Golden Teachers, five B+s, and four Oak Ridges!

Looking forward to sharing more with you all as we go and learning more from your advice/tips. 😊

8/14 UPDATE: All are inoculated!  :syringe: We used our SAB (not pictured), of course, to do the deed. We're debating where exactly to keep them for colonization... Can't wait to see some activity!

8/15 UPDATE: We decided to put them on the shelf above the light so they get more ambient, instead of direct, light. I'll update again when we see some myc!

Thank you, Dave!

8/19 UPDATE!

Five days after inoculation and we have the first signs of mycelium! There are only a couple of bottles with no obvious spots. I've attached some pics of the best-looking ones so far! The Oak Ridges seem to be the most developed; most of the B+s are looking good; and the Golden Teachers seem to be the slowest, with only one showing super obvious spots. The closet has been pretty stable at 77 F and 35% humidity.

The best part about learning cultivation is going from checking every jar for every centimeter of growth (I think everyone has this phase) to saying "omg harvest time again, where am I going to put all these guys??" 😄

Interesting... this isnt a typical tek for newbies to use. Congrats on the uniqueness lol. Everythings looking good so far, keep it up.

Good luck and welcome to shroomery

I can imagine! We wanted to be extra detailed documenting everything with this one since it's our first grow  but probably will chill out for subsequent ones, haha

Thank you! Yeah, we were considering PF tek but felt drawn to bottles and rye  We've wanted to grow for years and finally have the space and money to do it, so I guess we don't feel like 100% newbies... only newbies in practice--which... still makes us newbies lmao

Hi again, everyone! Thought I'd update with a few more pics. Everything's looking good, we think! For fun, we've been tracing a few of the bottles' growth  We're wondering when/if we should shake them? At 30%? (And what's the best way to estimate that?) Or should we just leave them be? I've read a lot of different things. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I'm pretty certain with muda bottles you don't shake since it's already mixed with the substrate. If you have just grain jars that are colonizing then you would wanna shake them now but you don't need to worry about that.

This was wrong so ignore it. The next is still true though.

The rhizo growth on some of those is looking great! You'll be getting fruits in no time.

I like to shake my Muda bottles and the recipe I use is also just rye coir and verm. Yours look ready to shake

You're right though, Muda did state he didn't shake his bottles.

Thing is Muda also used up to 15cc of LC per jar... That's a lot of inoculation points. His recipes also yield a pretty solid PF style cake that doesn't shake. The bran in particular makes things really sticky.

Just grain, coir and verm shakes pretty well though and it helps spread things around just like in regular grain jars. If you used 15cc of LC per quart of grain you wouldn't have to shake that shit either, it'd ready in 5 days just like Muda's bottles in the write up

Thank you both for weighing in! That all totally makes sense! We put about 2cc in each--so nowhere near 15, haha  (and with MSS, not LC or LI) But your go-ahead makes me feel a lot more confident about giving 'em a shake!

Right?! We're surprised, too, haha! I did try to do my research when sourcing everything, and we tried to pick "easier to grow"/"beginner" varieties. Plus, we're definitely being very intentional about everything and trying to infuse love with every action, if that makes any difference--but maybe we just got lucky, too!:heart::mushroom2:

08/29 UPDATE: We shook 10 of the 14 bottles! We're doing a bit of an experiment with the other four--going to continue tracking their growth every 24 hours for at least a little while longer.

Here are some bonus pics! A few close-ups of a couple of the bottles we're "tracing" and a few "before" pics of bottles we shook!

How did you find shaking them? Did you have a hard time breaking up the clumps?

Most of them were fairly easy to get distributed, but we didn't expect we'd have to shake them so hard, haha! The Golden Teachers were a bit easier because they had a little less growth; a couple of the B+s were tougher because they were probably closer to 50% colonized. I knew myc grows in all directions, but it was cool to see exactly how much of each bottle was "tied up" already!

Hi again! I thought I wouldn't be updating for at least a couple of days, but we're already seeing more growth in the shaken bottles (especially the couple that ended up with a chunk left on top)! Isn't the myc supposed to go dormant for a bit after shaking?

I'll update again when we have significant growth, but I just thought it was really cool we're starting to see changes already!

09/02 UPDATE:

Ah! Sorry for the delay. I took videos of each bottle on Wednesday and then never got the time to post them! I think everything's looking good  Probably a noob reaction, but we were so surprised how fast they recover after being shaken! We decided to shake two more of the bottles, so a couple are 48hrs-ish behind the others. (And there are two left that we're not shaking just to see the difference )

The pics below are from today. Seems like the Oak Ridges are the fastest, followed by the Golden Teachers, and the B+s are the slowest.

Golden Teachers  /  Oak Ridges  /  B+s  (All 4 days post-shake)

These are the two we shook on Wednesday, so they are a bit behind the others. (2 days post-shake)

The two left unshaken!

9/5 UPDATE: Most bottles are looking fine, but we noticed yellow-colored condensation in one of the Oak Ridge bottles. Are we being paranoid or is this bad? Thanks in advance for any insight!

Woke up today and now most bottles have a couple drops of metabolites. I'm wondering maybe it's a bit too warm in there? I think it's been sticking around 80 to 81 F... It was almost 82 when I checked today, so I've left the door open to hopefully cool it down a little.

when u inoc with spores bacteria is just something you gotta expect. cooling it down a lil might help tho. ive had subs that were almost completely yellow give me decent flushes so dont worry. definitely get ready to clone some fruits on agar tho, thats the kewlest experience imo

cloning tissue on agar is much easier than starting from germ plates and it teaches you what good growth looks like so there are advantages to starting when you already have fruits

Hi again, everyone! Sorry for the lack of updates recently. I've been taking pictures as we've been doing things, though.

09/07 (Last Wednesday):

It might have been a little early, but we decided to case two jars and start fruiting them. We put our SAB under the monotub so the light is (hopefully) close enough!

09/10 (Yesterday):

We saw the first changes yesterday--just a little colonization of the verm?

Today, we decided to case the rest of them!

Most everything looked good, except four bottles had blue spots? Is this just bruising or should we throw these away?

09/15 UPDATE:

We did decide to case the rest on Sunday! So the middle two bottles (raised a bit) were cased on the 7th (day 8 today) and the other 12 were cased on the 11th (day 4 today). We think they're looking alright? Maybe a little slow, but they might not have been totally consolidated yet...

9/19 UPDATE:

Hi, all! We noticed today our temp/humidity gauge was broken, so we put a new one in. Worried now that we haven't had as high of humidity as we thought (~95%) as the new one reads 91%! Any tips for raising that would be appreciated -- we don't have perlite but maybe some coir or verm at the bottom would help? 🥴

On the exciting side of things, we believe we have spotted our first pin!! (Circled below, haha) Woo!

Mazel tov!!!

91%RH is more than enough. RH doesn't really matter anyway. Surface conditions is what it's all about

There is no need to modify lids when using ziploc twist. You just unscrew lids for 3/4 of an inch during PC.

See Muda's comment:
Quote:

Step 6
put on your lids. for Ziplocs I use an un modified lid. I simply unscrew it roughlt 3/4 of an inch to alow for gas exchange.

Violet is also using unmodified ziploc twist as well. See PODS TEK.

:imo: unmodified lids come with some advantages:
- No need for aluminium foil
- Circular pattern of threads prevents contamination
- Easy to control FAE
- Invitro

09/22 UPDATE:

Hi, everyone! We have a few pins!! The B+ in the middle was the first to show any pins, but the Oak Ridge next to it has taken off! I think there are 10 to 12 pins in the Oak Ridge and 4 or 5 in the B+. No signs on the others yet, but they are about four days behind the two that have pins now. We've been worried about enough FAE but are probably prematurely worrying, haha.

All the bottles / B+ / Oak Ridge

09/23 UPDATE:

So, we feel very silly as we thought everything might be stalling, and then realized today that we haven't been looking at the sides of the bottles! There are TONS of side pins on each one we can see! This is normal, right? They'll eventually push through up to the top? 🤔

All bottles this morning, and side pins of B+, then the other two are Golden Teacher

My bet is that most of those pins abort when they are still very tiny and give way to surface pins.

I can still see plenty of tiny water droplets on the surface. Pretty sure you're good.

FAE could be slightly higher though. Maybe remove the bottom strip of tape off a couple of holes

My husband suggested that, haha! We don't have perlite... And our tub is technically a monotub, not a SGFC. 😕 So we'd have to switch a lot stuff around!

👍 Thank you! We noticed a lot of the myc is starting to bruise, too, so we cracked the lid and ran a fan in the room (not directly on them) for a while yesterday. And I took off the bottom strips of tape from two of the holes this morning (after I took the photo below)!

1) All the bottles this morning; 2) the Oak Ridge with all the pins! Not too worried about this one ☺️; 3) the B+ with a few pins (now 6, I think); 4) another B+ with its first pin!; 5) possible bruising, we think 🤔 it's hard to see in the photo...

10/02/22 UPDATE:

Hi, everyone! Things are chugging along. A couple of the Oak Ridge bottles are producing a few fatties! There are still four bottles without top pins--I noticed those (mostly GTs) also have gigantic side pins--is this normal? 🤔 I worry that they're not liking the surface conditions so everything's trying to grow on the sides 😬

1) All bottles this morning before the first mist; 2) our largest pins (all Oak Ridge); 3/4) two of the Golden Teacher bottles with no top pins but massive side pins (sorry for the lower-quality--shooting through the tub)

We want to! But we only have one light and one fruiting tub... Would we have to add perlite to the bottom? Would "cakes" and bottles both be okay growing together in the same tub? 🤔

😂 Awesome! Thank you both for the encouragement! We decided: Why not expand? We'll have perlite and another tub (and another light for good measure) by tomorrow! (We also got a Presto dehydrator!)

So, we're going to make it an SGFC and pop out the four that don't have top pins to fruit as cakes in there. Should we treat them just like PF Tek? 🤔

Yes, they work exactly like pf tek. You can fruit them any way you can fruit pf tek

Perfect, thank you! I realized, since there are so many pins already, we probably don't have to worry about rinsing them or rolling them in verm 😂 We're excited to get it all set up and will definitely be posting some pics tomorrow!

Oh, okay... I wasn't aware of these! So, an unmodified tub with coco coir in the bottom instead? 🤔

you just need something wet on the bottom. you can use the perlite you already have

Okay, yeah! After some research last night, we decided to go for coir (and had it anyway because it's in the substrate ).

BIG update today! We pulled six out to fruit as cakes! We have them in our newly-made humidity chamber... They're already looking a bit dry on the surface. Do we mist them directly?

1) Out new setup; 2/3) Cakes from the outside and inside; the back three are Golden Teachers, the front are two Oak Ridges and a B+; 4) the remaining bottles

We harvested the few pins that were on the tops (now bottoms) of the ones we flipped into cakes. We also had the first veil break on one in one of the Oak Ridge bottles! So we harvested that, as well  They are all currently dehydrating in our new dehydrator! :crazy2:

1) All the pins, a mix of all three varieties; 2) the only side pin we harvested from the sides of one of the cakes because it was already so big (Golden Teacher); 3/4) Our first broken veil! 2.8g wet  / Good shot of the gills! (Oak Ridge)

10/04/22 UPDATE:

Everything's looking about the same today. We're wondering about all the side pins on the cakes (that have been smushed in the bottles until yesterday)... Should we give them time to grow out? Or should we harvest them and dunk the cakes, to kinda restart them for a second flush? 🤔 We're thinking that might be best because they seem to dry out quickly right now.

10/05/22 UPDATE:

We noticed some bruising at the bottom of the cakes, so we bottom-watered them yesterday and they've started to perk up more.

Because we haven't seen a ton going on with our bottles (and worried about them being too dry), we harvested the biggest fruits and then made another humidity chamber (although not truly one as the tub is modded) and pulled them out to fruit like cakes, as well! We didn't flip these upside-down, as they still had some top pins that we wanted to give a chance to grow. We also decided not to rinse off the verm first, but maybe we should have? We made a mess, haha...

10/08/22 UPDATE:

Hi, everyone! Been super busy with work/school, but I've been taking pictures! The first six cakes are doing really well! We've harvested a modest amount already  Here's Thursday, Friday, and today:

1/2) Middle Golden Teacher, Thursday and yesterday; 3) Left Golden Teacher yesterday

This morning's harvest (wet weights; everything is currently in the dehydrator)

B+, Oak Ridge, Golden Teacher (biggins' & pins)

I've been taking pictures of each wet weight and dry weight, but I haven't done the overall calculations yet. I think we've harvested somewhere between 7 and 14 grams dry so far!

The other eight cakes are a couple of days behind the first six, but they are starting to grow a bit more. I also tried to clean them up a bit--took some extra verm out and tried to harvest all of the obvious aborts.

😂 Right?! We actually weighed everything a minute ago and we have 17.7g dry with a couple others still in the dehydrator! I actually took our first gram of pins last Monday 🤯 just a gram, but it was way stronger than I expected!

10/16 UPDATE:

Hi again, everyone! All cakes are officially on their second flush  We dunked the first five on the 10th, the next eight on the 11th, and the last (we had a slow OR and wanted to give it a chance to fully flush) yesterday. I've been taking pictures of the tubs almost every day--almost as good as a time-lapse camera. Boy, do I wish we could install cameras in the tubs! Haha

These are from the 9th, 11th, 12th, 14th, yesterday, and today!

They're going for it on this second flush!

Finally, this is a bit random, but I started needle felting! And, of course, my first projects involved fungi... :mushroom2:

Amanita muscaria and psilocybe cubensis (modeled from one of our Golden Teachers, actually!)

Hi again, everyone! (It's been a minute, but thank you, cozmyc and SirPsycho!)

The cakes are still going strong, though we're now approaching fourth flushes, so (about 10 days ago) we inoculated some more bottles! (We used up what we had left of our MSSs for them, but plan to do agar from now on since we made our first 24 plates, as well!)

1/2) Our six cake tub on 10/16 and 10/26; 3) Our eight cake tub on 10/20; 4) Our first babe to weigh over 20g wet! (Golden Teacher )

We also moved out of the closet and have this new setup! From the top to bottom: (red arrow) Extra grain/substrate ingredients, supplies like gloves and MP tape, pressure cookers, etc.; (orange arrow) Agar plates (woo!), colonizing bottles, and harvest jars; (yellow arrow) Dehydrating station; (green arrow) tub/SAB storage right now, but we installed our second light there and will have more fruiting tubs going soon; (blue arrow) Our currently fruiting tubs!
