Our First Grow Journal - Jumping in with Bottle Tek!

Hi everyone! Long time lurker, first time posting (in/about cultivation)! My partner and I just started our first grow and wanted to share as we go.
We’ve cleared out one of our closets to dedicate to our shroomies. It stays around 79–81° F (of course, it’s August, so that’s probably the warmest it will get) and 35% humidity--but we plan to keep the monotub around 95% (?). We’ve hung a 6500K LED (I know… fluorescent would probably be better, but we’re going to see how the LED does) light over where the monotub will go. I’ll post pictures when we actually have something set up in it. 😉
We are using MudaFuka’s Bottle Tek with 14 quart-sized Ziplocs that will fruit in a monotub (without a liner and using Pastywhyte’s Easy Micropore Mono Tek). We are basically using the coir-based recipe, though we’ve simplified it a bit: rye berries, coir, verm. (Hopefully it’s not *too* simple!)
We prepped the grain/substrate mix (using a mix of MudaFuka’s tek and Spitball’s Quick Rye Prep Tek) and sterilized the bottles in our (Presto 23 qt) PC today! We are inoculating tomorrow. We definitely plan to do agar/LC/etc. eventually but are just starting with MSSs for now. Going to do five Golden Teachers, five B+s, and four Oak Ridges!

Looking forward to sharing more with you all as we go and learning more from your advice/tips. 😊
8/14 UPDATE: All are inoculated! We used our SAB (not pictured), of course, to do the deed. We're debating where exactly to keep them for colonization... Can't wait to see some activity!

8/15 UPDATE: We decided to put them on the shelf above the light so they get more ambient, instead of direct, light. I'll update again when we see some myc!

Thank you, Dave!
8/19 UPDATE!
Five days after inoculation and we have the first signs of mycelium! There are only a couple of bottles with no obvious spots. I've attached some pics of the best-looking ones so far! The Oak Ridges seem to be the most developed; most of the B+s are looking good; and the Golden Teachers seem to be the slowest, with only one showing super obvious spots. The closet has been pretty stable at 77 F and 35% humidity.

The best part about learning cultivation is going from checking every jar for every centimeter of growth (I think everyone has this phase) to saying "omg harvest time again, where am I going to put all these guys??" 😄

Interesting... this isnt a typical tek for newbies to use. Congrats on the uniqueness lol. Everythings looking good so far, keep it up.
Good luck and welcome to shroomery

I can imagine! We wanted to be extra detailed documenting everything with this one since it's our first grow but probably will chill out for subsequent ones, haha

Thank you! Yeah, we were considering PF tek but felt drawn to bottles and rye We've wanted to grow for years and finally have the space and money to do it, so I guess we don't feel like 100% newbies... only newbies in practice--which... still makes us newbies lmao

Hi again, everyone! Thought I'd update with a few more pics. Everything's looking good, we think! For fun, we've been tracing a few of the bottles' growth We're wondering when/if we should shake them? At 30%? (And what's the best way to estimate that?) Or should we just leave them be? I've read a lot of different things. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I'm pretty certain with muda bottles you don't shake since it's already mixed with the substrate. If you have just grain jars that are colonizing then you would wanna shake them now but you don't need to worry about that.
This was wrong so ignore it. The next is still true though.
The rhizo growth on some of those is looking great! You'll be getting fruits in no time.

You're right though, Muda did state he didn't shake his bottles.
Thing is Muda also used up to 15cc of LC per jar... That's a lot of inoculation points. His recipes also yield a pretty solid PF style cake that doesn't shake. The bran in particular makes things really sticky.
Just grain, coir and verm shakes pretty well though and it helps spread things around just like in regular grain jars. If you used 15cc of LC per quart of grain you wouldn't have to shake that shit either, it'd ready in 5 days just like Muda's bottles in the write up

Thank you both for weighing in! That all totally makes sense! We put about 2cc in each--so nowhere near 15, haha (and with MSS, not LC or LI) But your go-ahead makes me feel a lot more confident about giving 'em a shake!

Thanks! Right?! I'm kinda sad to break it all up, haha!
I'll inevitably take some pictures after shaking tomorrow and will update again within the next few days! Thanks again, everyone!

Right?! We're surprised, too, haha! I did try to do my research when sourcing everything, and we tried to pick "easier to grow"/"beginner" varieties. Plus, we're definitely being very intentional about everything and trying to infuse love with every action, if that makes any difference--but maybe we just got lucky, too!
08/29 UPDATE: We shook 10 of the 14 bottles! We're doing a bit of an experiment with the other four--going to continue tracking their growth every 24 hours for at least a little while longer.

Here are some bonus pics! A few close-ups of a couple of the bottles we're "tracing" and a few "before" pics of bottles we shook!

How did you find shaking them? Did you have a hard time breaking up the clumps?

Most of them were fairly easy to get distributed, but we didn't expect we'd have to shake them so hard, haha! The Golden Teachers were a bit easier because they had a little less growth; a couple of the B+s were tougher because they were probably closer to 50% colonized. I knew myc grows in all directions, but it was cool to see exactly how much of each bottle was "tied up" already!
