Would a top layer at spawning time do it or does it really need casing at colonization?

Have two sets of jars about ready for tubs. Hopefully this time they will pin for me / get me something to clone.

Some people made it happen without a casing.
I`ve always used one.
Just a thin layer of verm worked for me on my first grow. Now Im using Asura`s casing recipe for pans just because I`ve prepped a bunch of it and it works great.

Been working from spores once again after a run in with mold. How does this myc look? Been moderately slow to grow, slower than cubes. Slightly fluffy and very fine growth: (ignore the sharpie notation)

It look good. The speed is normal imo. Once you have a clone culture it should start to move faster on agar but not by much.

Here is the final result. I have one more tray that just started pinning. The tray pictured below took just over 2 whole months to get here, from spawning. And I initiated pinning by letting the casing layer dry out completely, then misted to re-moisten, then put back into the tent.

Gorgeous brother! So basically the same thing I've done to trigger my Bisporus. Perfect. Will try!

Beautiful photo!

It makes me wonder about substrate water content. I had mine pinning at 14 days, and my substrate (CVG) was squeezed hard before being mixed with spawn. Same thing for the casing. I only cased after full colonization and I only started misting at the 10 days mark after spawning my jars.

I think TheFreshPrints had his substrate squeezed to field capacity too.

I'd be curious to know how wet the other guys in this thread who had success with Semperviva prepped it, and how long it took for them to see pins.

Does Semp needs to be fairly dry before receiving moisture and therefore start pinning? It's just a trail... Maybe a dead end.

Has anyone thought/answered this before?

Don't think anyone's tested the theory yet but it makes sense. Plenty of mushrooms in the wild will be dried out during the summer and start to fruit after a heavy rain. Replicating that in the indoor environment makes sense

Yeah my semp sub was pretty damn dry compared to how I run my cubes.  I didn't even see surface moisture when it started pinning.

I'll try some side-by-sides on this next run with different field capacity

Ive got some semperviva agar plates going, and I was wondering if someone could give me a quick snapshot of what growing conditions should be like..

Also, I was talking to someone and they said semperviva can be grown using Pf Tek.. is this accurate? If so, does that mean that they can be grown using the same methods as cubensis, or am I missing something? I want to make sure I'm prepared for this grow by the time my plates are ready.

Sorry for the the total noob question, I tried the search function and couldn't find a relevant answer. (Mostly found grow logs or pictures)

Yep, they will grow in he exact same conditions as cubensis. Ideally for the fruiting stage you want more FAE and therefore humidity but they'll grow just like cubes.

Thanks Mr Psycho! That makes things easier than I expected.

I'll probably do both Pf Tek using LC and grain with agar wedges... it sounds like I'll just need another water tub for the cakes so I can regulate the FAE and humidity to suit their needs.

Hopefully I'll have something to start sharing in the thread soon ๐Ÿคž

I put mine in a shoebox dub and open to harvest and rehydrate. It just sits most of the time.

Was also considering doing cakes, here's some cool grows by RiverBum (1)(2)(3) *one is ATL and Jalisco, but still cool.
