How E-Voting Threatens Democracy

How E-Voting Threatens Democracy

Harris discovered that she could enter the vote database using Microsoft Access -- a standard program often bundled with Microsoft Office -- and change votes without leaving a trace. Diebold hadn't password-protected the file or secured the audit log, so anyone with access to the tabulation program during an election -- Diebold employees, election staff or even hackers if the county server were connected to a phone line -- could change votes and alter the log to erase the evidence.

'And there are concerns about the partisan loyalties of voting executives -- Diebold's chief executive, for example, is a top fund-raiser for President Bush.'

The joke just gets worse.

Thank god these guys don't run the internet banking site I use!

It is not e-voting that threatens democracy, it is corruption that threatens democracy. Hardly a newsflash.

corruption in the political world aint going nowhere; however, we can reduce the means in which corruption empowers politicians (i.e. fraudent elections).

a paper election would be easier to corrupt than a well run electronic version.

well, that's too bad a "well-run electronic" voting system isnt currently a reality.

paper elections corrupt? of course - im sure there is a long, secret history of election fraud. but I dont think this current batch of e-voting machines are a safe substutite.

would you agree that more complex systems have more possible flaws?

has there been any widespread software or network that hasnt been hacked?

touche

Still, I'd rather use the standard paper voting then use an insecure Diebold machine - at least there is an audit trail. did you read the article?

Yeah I read the article. Complete incompetence! I just think that if any form of open democracy is going to work we are going to need to institute some form of e-voting. It is obviously not impossible to make an extremely secure system which would allow voters to vote from the comfort of their own homes.

india managed, and they did it on a scale quite
larger than that in the US.

their voting occurs over a week's time.

but then again...maybe that's why my dev job
is being shopped out to sanjay.

Though, we could always involve public voting that has no chance of getting hacked by anyone due to its transparent structure. BTW, those who are not ready to go public, wanting to be the ones who decide the future of their society are little bit vain characters.
