Hopefully the results will be encouraging, but even if they're not I plan on running more jars.. one bad jar doesn't really mean anything.. I could have sent too much of the plate and not cut far enough from the center..
I've got 3 plates that are knotting up, so I'm saving them to see if it's actually possible to get a plate pin on WA.. but I'll be sending a bunch of my other plats soon.

for real, youโre doing some amazing stuff for the community with this thread & itโs all great info to have. the more we know the more we can apply our knowledge & streamline shit.
but the way we treat plants & fungus is just so hilarious on a meta level. cutting it down to a few cells with a hot knife & forcing it to do all this stress response shit, shaking it up as itโs trying to colonize & consume nutrients, breaking it up & forcing it to recolonize & weโre out here like โoh yeah, the myc LOVES itโ lol

I completely agree.. I've actually had the same thoughts before.. a lot of things done in the name of scientific progress tend to have this effect..
Hopefully, since I've been running experiments on the poor mycelium, I'll relieve any suffering when I send the plates to grain and allow them to flourish

oh yeah, itโs much easier to get data if you throw ethics out the window. luckily fungus doesnโt have a seat at the UNโฆ yet

Honestly using water agar is like cheating, where is the craft and art in this? No need for taking great care to cut the tiniest sample over and over again just to find out there is still a contam riding along. I was throwing this pin onto a water agar plate and taking transfers when it had barely grown out 10mm just to get 4 pristine clean plates on the first try and I could probably have gone straight to LC with this making this whole thing soooooooo easy boooooooring. You young folks are missing out on a painful but character building experience.

What challenge has life got ready next? Painting by numbers maybe?
This is utterly ridiculous.

bad ass dude!! im currently trying this on some cultures that look weird & am excited to see the results
has anyone tried germinating spores on WA yet? didnโt feel like digging through the thread at the moment

TLDR; likely too slow to be useful.

I haven't tried to do it, but I may toss some spores on a plate later and post the results ๐ค
Personally, I like to use plates that have slightly less nutes and agar than my normal plates when making plates specifically for germination... using less agar will make the agar softer and there will be more water to help hydrate the spores.. using less nutrients will help the plate colonize faster, giving you quick growth to transfer to a new plate.
Sometimes you'll see spores germinate in a non nutritional syringe, so I think its possible the plate would germinate.. however I suspect that anything that does germinate will be thin and whispy and hard to distinguish what, if anything, would be worth transferring.
My recommendation for now would be to use nutrient plates for germination.. this will give the spores energy to germinate, and the mycelium will probably be easier to identify.. but I'll post my findings after I give it a try.

you're absolutely right.. if used as your primary method of cleaning, WA does take the sport out of it.. but then again, so do PF pucks and the jossex poke (not aimed at Faht, he's a total beast that takes things to a whole different level with his oven bags and notoriously clean swabs, etc)
WA has a time and place in this hobby, but if it's used as a crutch, it will definitely take the fun out of things.

Yeah.. but someone mentioned earlier automatically doing T1 WA plates.. then all the T2s would be clean, or you could even just send the T1s to grain...
one of my favorite things about this hobby is the agar work .. if you always use WA, and don't just use it for the tricky cultures that won't clean up or are really contaminated, doesn't it kinda take a lot of the fun out of good old fashioned agar cleaning?
If you use it all the time, it kinda makes me think of when I'd use a cheat code on a video game when I was a kid... I'd get bored of the game really fast..
If used once in a while, it's more like using a "potion" or "power-up"... you can still enjoy the game

Gotta say this feels like some boomer ass shit lads. Sure you could get a nice desk job but wouldnโt you like to destroy your body working construction for 20 years? Maybe Iโd hate agar less if I had a FFU thoughโฆ
