The second coming by Yeats * 1
    #27899982 - 08/12/22 02:47 AM (1 year, 5 months ago)

The Second Coming
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

I first read this quoted in a Stephen King novel a while back.
I always think about these lines :
"The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity."

How many hate filled people does it take to create widespread terror and horror? The above poem was written to describe post WW1 Europe.

The rhetorics, dogma, slogans and chants seem to be building.
Don't be convinced of anything ever.
Certainty, and the need to KNOW and to BE RIGHT, are what ruins us.

Be fine with the unknown, be unconvinced. Accept an uncontrolled future.
The only way to control the outcome is to limit possibility. On a personal level, the ultimate certainty is suicide. Everything settled forever.

On a national level, I think similar things happen.
If you get everyone to think that the future must be secured, and no effort must be spared, all possibilities must be contained...

I wrote this once, maybe someone will enjoy it

Two suns rose, horizons opposed.
Frozen. Blank. Purposeful.
A promise fulfilled, Everything burned.

“The strength of a person's spirit would then be measured by how much 'truth' he could tolerate, or more precisely, to what extent he needs to have it diluted, disguised, sweetened, muted, falsified.”
