Board sports * 4

Mehhhhh so I tried posting in the sports section once about surfing buuuuuuut it seems to me like the sports section is all about ball sports.. so I am going to try again here in the great outdoors cuz forreals the great outdoors is where we ride...so any riders??? I love ALL board sports... Surfing has always been a passion of mine. I have wanted to learn my whole life and finally got the taste and I love it!!! My family couldn't afford to buy me a surfboard when I was younger, which is cool and I totally get it.. I got into skateboarding and skim boarding due to wanting to learn how to surf and am passionate about all of them. Never tried snowboarding yet, definitely would love to do it... I have heard it is a lot different from surfing and skating.. The closest to snowboarding I have gotten is taking the trucks off my skateboard and riding down snow ramps we have built...anyone else like to shred???

I went surfing once, but it wasn't for me.
I Used to do a lot of casual skateboarding, but I haven't been on a board in a little over a year.
And I have gone snowboarding a bunch of times (I used to live in northern NY).

However, I never really "ripped" on any of them (The closest I got was probably on a snowboard). I've always done it for the enjoyment of the ride.

Currently we get average, but clean fun-sized waves where I stay in South Africa. 4-6 foot, just perfect for my longboard. I only started to surf in my early thirties (now in my late 30's), so I never really got past the intermediate stage, but man it's by far my favorite sport!

I hope you'll get better conditions soon, Ayymannduhh.

Right on!!! That is awesome, I have seen some good footage on waves from south Africa before, definitely jealous lol. That's great that you are riding 4-6 feet, and learning in your early 30s is an extra bonus! I am in my early 30s now and pretty much just learned. It's funny because I actually got my 1st board in my younger 20's. I worked in a thrift store at the time and someone donated a Malibu board and my boss priced it for like $9 total!! Had to get it, took it out, caught my 1st wave and thought that was it, I was a surfer...well a "friend" of mine had my board at her house and got rid of it...I went a few years without it and thought shit I really want to get another one, let me get a REAL board lol. So got a used one and took it out and the shit sank...I thought it was the board..so I sold it and bought a newer looking used board and had the same issue.. I thought well maybe the waves just aren't big enough..so a day came where we had 6-8 ft from a storm that came through and I thought that was going to be my moment.. this is the biggest set of waves I have ever been in...I thought I was this great surfer because I caught a wave on my old board and knew what I was doing, like I got this lol ...anyways I paddle out and start seeing them on both sides of me and was like fuck this is kind of scary lol I was right in the middle and new that my time was coming..so get this one that I knew if I didn't try and ride it out that I was going to get hit pretty hard by it so I turned around and paddled and this thing lifted me up and dunked me down harddddd hahaha so scary!!!!! That was my realization that I had no idea wtf I was doing, that I wasn't a real surfer and how powerful the water really is...it was an eye opener, but truly grateful and proud of myself for trying or else I would had never known...So I realized the only reason I caught anything on old 1st board was because of it being a beginners board and that there was nothing wrong with my other boards other than me not knowing how to work them lol.. sorry so long just wanted to share because when you see people ride they all make it look so easy until you actually get out there and try it. So kudos for even reaching intermediate, a lot of people give up too early on

I can relate to a lot I just read, lol.
Yeah, but giving up has never been an option as I love just being in the water. Nobody can call me or bug me, just me and my board. In the beginning it felt more like being in a washing machine than in the ocean, but even that I didn't mind.
And I know exactly what you mean by it looks so easy when you see the professionals on their board. They became one unit with the board and the wave. Maybe one day, but for now I am happy with the skills I learned.

If you get the chance to go to South Africa for a surf trip, I can highly recommend it. So many different spots around here. I still have to go to Jeffrey's Bay, the waves over there are just perfect.

Oh and sharks... I wasn't sure about them, since the great white is roaming these waters. But I figured that it's more likely to get killed on land here than by a shark. So far I only surfed with dolphins and seals.

I might check for some pictures I took with my gopro and post them in this thread tomorrow.

I think it's about 60% surfing and 40% skateboarding. Obviously it's its own thing, but I think that's probably a good representation (plus ramps/snow structures make it 10x more fun). It's kind of like surfing, but you're in complete control.
I found it to be the easiest of the board sports that I've tried.

I've always wanted to surf, never got the chance though.  Instead I got a longboard, which has been awesome, and a snowboard, which is also really fun but the lift tickets were cost prohibitive as a teenager so I've used the longboard more.

Longboarding down a hill does feel a lot like snowboarding, but it takes a while longer to learn how to stop via board slide.  Slide gloves made from work gloves, epoxy, and corian sample tiles are a good idea protect your hands while you learn.

I've been wanting to get into another board sport, kiteboarding, for about 10 years now.  I even went so far as to buy a 9m kite, which I've never flown.  But someday when I can afford a harness, a few more kites, the rest of the gear I'd need, and maybe some lessons, I'd like to get out and hit the great lakes!

I feel ya, and definitely understand... There is something magical about the water lol That's a great attitude to have, dedication is key! It's funny, I actually bought my last short board from a fella moving to south Africa. I need to do some studying lol how are yours waters most of the year? Your seasons?

Yo that is awesome!!!! I have been close to some dolphins but not like that, and seals too??? That's so neat!!! As far as sharks go, I mean it's part of the territory I suppose lol. I think about them from time to time but I have never let the fear of them being there stop me from wanting to play. Reading that actually makes me feel even more at ease. So this may be a silly question but what kind of Wild life on land is South Africa dealing with?? I mean I know parts of Africa of course have some serious animals but are they everywhere in Africa or just in certain places?

And your pictures, I'd love to see them if you want to post them!

It seems like a lot of fun, I think I would enjoy winter a lot more lol. I always heard that the steering was a lot different. The easiest?? That's pretty interesting, even over skateboarding?

Why not, what happened?? What's your story?? Lol ...I took my longboard wheels/trucks off and put them on one of my reg skateboard decks lol. I like longboards to a point, I grew up skating a regular skatboard and just feel more comfortable turning than I do on a long board, but they are nice to cruise on for sure. That's why I switched them hahahha. But cruising downhill on one I haven't done..I have on a regular board, so I get the gyst of it, but longboard wheels go way faster than regular skateboard wheels so I am sure it's def a much faster ride. I have heard that snowboarding in general can be pretty expensive...the lift as you mentioned, the board, the boots, the bindings, and whatever else comes involved. Definitely one of those things that would need to be planned carefully lol kite boarding looks like fun too, they get some mad air sometimes, it looks really intense...I ways get scared when they get close by me lol like shit I hope they see me out here hahah... if you can handle running you should try skimboarding! I actually hate running, and I am not very fast either but for whatever reason I WILL run after that board lol it's a lot of fun!!

Well, it depends a bit where in the country you'd like to go. The east coast gets influenced by the Indian ocean, so the water is warm all year around (in winter we get water temperatures of 15 degrees Celsius here). The East coast offers many great surf spots, including Jeffrey's Bay. The West coast gets influenced by the Atlantic, so it's quite cold there all year around. There's a never ending tube up in Namibia, I'd like to surf. Anyway, I am lucky, where I stay it's season all year around, even though spring and autumn bring awesome swells. I don't like summer time too much as the spots are getting crowded and I like to have the waves aaall for myself .

Regarding wildlife... there's not much left, accept for in the national parks which we luckily got many of. Lot's of poachers here kill Rhinos for their horns. It's very lucrative and people sell the horns for millions. As you an imagine there's lot's of poverty here, so it's quite tempting I guess. The horns normally go to China so rich business men can snort their powder...
Poverty is also the reason why I said it's safer in the water than on land. Here you can get killed for a mobile phone if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Human beings are sadly the greatest danger here. But don't let that scare you off, generally you are relatively save if you stick to certain rules though.
Oh and you get Baboons here, which I also got a lot of respect for.

Here are some pictures:

This one is a spot that's quite rocky and it works only a few times a year, but when it works it's epic. I have a lot of respect for the rocks though and I prefer sandy spots.

Below is a picture of a spot I visit regularly.

Thanks for sharing, that's awesome.. That's pretty cool having an option on what ocean you want to go to lol I am here in the Atlantic been flat all summer.. storm seasons approaching however so something will happen eventually lol... that's pretty sad when humans are a bigger problem than the animals... I can't even imagine. I know it is a beautiful country and still worth a visit for sure!!
