This mushroom is growing in my compost and it is Colorado at 9000 ft elevation. Can someone tell me what it is and is it edible ? Is it safe for people and dogs ?

Agaricus sp for sure.
Does it turn red or yellow of you slice it in half?

Agaricus sp.
I’m not very good at distinguishing different Agaricus species, but compare to Agaricus augustus

It's not Agaricus augustus that has a more scaly stem below the ring. I think this is one of the red stainers which are safe for humans and animals. Does the flesh stain red when you cut it? Does it have a fishy or sour smell?

I was thinking maybe something in or around agaricus sylvaticus with the veil remnants on the margin. If not that then something in that group for sure. Just wanted to see if it stained red.

The obvious guess would be Agaricus amicosus, which grows under spruce at that sort of altitude.
You need to cut it in half to verify that it's a red stainer.
Assuming you beat the maggots to it, they're edible and pretty good. I have eaten it several times.

I cut it in half but it didn't seem to change color. Ill look again tomorrow. There is no bad smell coming from it. There are no bugs or maggots. My dogs haven't eaten them yet but some dogs are getting sick when they eat some mushrooms. I don't know if these are the same mushrooms as the ones dogs are getting sick from.
