RAM is Random Access Memory.

Therefore, SDRAM is Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory, and DDR SDRAM is Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory.

SDRAM is used in older computers, while the newer computers use DDR SDRAM. DDR2 is coming out, which runs at lower volts, starts at PC4200 ~500MHz (I think, and that is also about the speeds which DDR1 maxes out at) and has a greater pin count. You cannot use DDR2 in DDR1-based motherboards.

If you're interested, DDR2 motherboards will be out in Q3 of 2004 and DDR2 is already out at a price of about $600 for 1GB of matched pair PC4200.

SDR is obsolete, they don't make it anymore
DDR is currently the standard
