listen to kast, my dungs are spreading rampantly and i wish i wouldve listened to him and mcman and made them with a higher dung/colonised cake ratio. kast, how long do you pasturize to kill all the molds and bad bacteria , without killing the benificial? am i killing all of them by boiling my dung instead of getting a thermometer and doing it just below boiling?

I can't say I know of any beneficial bacterias in dung, but pastuerization, as opposed to sterilization, is preferred because leaving behind SOME contaminants makes it harder for any one of them to form a strong colony and destroy your whole project. If you're boiling the dung, your water is too hot. Without a thermometer, the best way to determine proper pastuerization temps is to bring water to a boil and then reduce heat. It's also much easier if you have a vegetable/seafood steamer. pasteurization for dung should go anywhere between 45 min. to an 1 1/2 hrs depending upon how much dung you've got going. Obviously, the more you have, the longer you need to pasteurize it.

Yo. An easier method if you're making larger amounts is to mix dung and shredded straw in a rubbermaid, boil up pots of water on the stove, pour on the water and cover the top of the rubbermaid. Wait a couple of hours and strain. A thing that's worth mentioning is that you should not have the dung/straw too wet when you spawn. Just like with jars moisture content is crucial. Wring and/or dry your dung/straw.

I keep the temp. at around 160*. But I've heard some people on here have had success with 140*, and I've even heard 180*, but the latter seems a bit high to me.
