Are all of us Artists Narcissistic?
    #2788266 - 06/12/04 06:35 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

The lengthly answers (in my other post in this forum) about what I've been having a hard time trying to figure out as an emerging artist was very nice to see. There is definately a universal sort of frustration when it comes to these, what seem to be, common questions...
At least I have some pretty decent advice here, and I apreciate the way that all of my questions were covered, and THEN some, this is truely great!

I have a feeling that there is alot of helping fellow artists out, online, and out on the street and in the gallerys. Am I right about this?

It definately is present that all artists can relate on more than just one level when it comes to some of these very mentaly taxing questions and barriers...well not really barriers, more like trying to apply something that is very basic to us Artists, and going from this simple way of just being artistic, to all of a sudden emersing yourself into the complicated logistics of the market, demand of the industries and competition, networking, and so much more....without taking away from the enjoyment, I go on and just love what I do.

It is definately intimidating, because lets face it, Im my own worse critic. Nevermind having a whole town not liking a particular presentation, or having the pressure of a boss or company breathing down my neck..it is definately a challenge, and for some reason, I keep thinking that no matter how much I research and educate myself, there is no avoiding some certain invaluable life experience that comes along at some point...learning from mistakes....no matter how much we have looked into something...you just learn as you go it seems...do you find that? RThis must be SO common hey?

Anyways, I dont think I will have any prob;lem at all doing what I love 12 hours a day, because there is SO much to learn....and you could never learn it all, even if you have 10 lifetimes to do so.
I just want to find the best tasting and best skills that define who I am personaly.

Of course, my big dream is inventing "the next big thing" that will take the worl by storm!! And I have this real weird narcisist atitude towards myself..that I'm special, just nobody knows it, and I have to prove it:) Does anyone else find this?

Anyways, thanks again!

No.

but we may seem narcissistic to others.

a friend of mine once said,

"Geniuses usually seem to be self-centered."

LMAO, OF COURSE they are Self-centered...

though we (here @ Shroomery) are Special because few know what we do,
and even fewer use the knowledge for re-creation,
a narcissistic artist believes he is the Source and owner the Art,
not merely a vessel through which the Art chooses to flow.

we ALL have the experience, we ALL have the vision,
but FEW will do what it takes to see the Vision become Reality.

best hurry up w/ that Next Big Thing,
one of US might beat you to it...

I think it's Pvt. Bell, in James Jones' The Thin Red Line who says something like "creative art is shit."

Jinx, I'm glad to see that you think so highly of yourself.

Artists should be put in jail for fraud

"a narcissistic artist believes he is the Source and owner the Art,

I cant COUNT how many times I felt , PUSHED to do something on my guitar, it sounded cool and then I thought......."where the HELL did that just come from?????????"

I have talked to many friends about this and all I have come up with it this......"its the ZONE" call it god your unconciousness or BOTH  ..maybe they are the same thing!

But Snowboarders get it , dancers get it , football, hockey and even Guitar playersd get it.

FOR ME, its best when I am sitting there and just fucking around with no expectations.

just Playing

If I'm merely a vessel for my music, then how come so many of my songs end up being about my life and experiences?

I think you are generally right about that. Artists tend to do well hanging out together. However, there are some who are just too far out there to fit in, but this has always been the case -- they usually end up on the fringes; occupying little elliptical orbits around the social clusters...

Galleries can be quite competitive environments, and egos and livelihoods are at stake, but it all depends on the gallery and the stable of artists. I've been around some good ones, and bad ones...

As far as online goes, I've never really found the right online clique, so I don't know, but I'm also not really a digital guy...

If you're looking for fellow visual artists to befriend, the best thing to do is find a drawing group. One of those things where artists all pitch-in once, or twice, a week for models and sit around and draw and bullshit with each other. Those things often lead to good friendships with other artists...

I dunno, just rambling along while my spurs go jingle, jangle, jingle...

I do think camaraderie with other artists is important, as it's important to have people to talk with who are going through the same problems and pondering the same types things; technique, market-wise, etc...

Art is a process of self-expression, self-organization and self-awareness,
this can be on the individual level, the collective, or both,
depending upon how it is percieved.

like Water that takes the form of the cup...

we are Not isolated individuals,
we Really are of One Mind.

if your relation is True to your individuated experience,
it will transcend the boundaries of Culture and Time.
if you reflect the Truth of your heart you are Creating for GXD.

Because you are writting more with your CONCIOUS mind, while some write more unconciously, and its much easier to write guitar unconciously (I feel) because man that just strolls along coming up with GREAT poetry out of no where is a GOOD poet.

A artist so developed that it all just comes "Natuaraly"( the zone, the flow etc, sports palyers and artists have sought this place for more then 100 years, its inside)
