Transmission died, repair or replace?

Transmission just died on my 2009 hyundai sonata in a parking lot. I had to get someone to help me point the car backwards so I could drive home backwards. Is this worth getting fixed? I am an electrician and need a van for side work so a new car wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but this month has slammed me financially and I cant stretch myself too much thinner then I already am. I can get a good enough minivan for 5-6k.

For me the issue would be looked at like this:
What would the car be worth without the fix?
What would a new car cost?
My car for example is currently worth about €5000
With a busted transmission it worth maybe €1000 (if that)
Getting a full gearbox overhaul is about €1200
So I can not get the repair, sell my car at a loss, pay another €4000 to get a similar used car that may have the same issue tomorrow
or
I get the repair, pay €1200 (with pain in my heart) but no further costs/hassles and at least that part of my car will be good as new for a while
I would get the repair
On a side note, I also save a small amount (€50) each month specifically for my car, so whenever its up for a service or unexpected issues I have some money available. I think 500 to 600 a year for maintenance is reasonable

A 13 year old Hyundai with a trashed transmission isn't worth shit really, those cars don't have the best resale value anyway due to issues like that... So it's what it's worth to you, really. If you've taken good care of it and don't live in the rust belt like me, it may be worth fixing. What's the mileage?

I am in Seattle, mileage is 143k I believe. I am pretty much resigned to getting a used SUV or minivan. I have around 10k to spend. Spent the last 2 nights researching whats available in my area. I know absolutely nothing about buying cars, but I need one ASAP. Any advice on making good decisions?
This may be a question for a different thread in a different section.

At that mileage on a Hyundai I personally wouldnt fix it.
You'll save several thousand on a private sale over a dealer, but if you don't know what to look for or have a mechanic friend to inspect them for you, there's definitely risks. In your area, with no rust to worry about, I'd get a Toyota 4 runner or something, but it's all personal preference. My dad had a Hyundai Santa Fe that's still going at 280k if you like Hyundai's, but Ive never been a fan. Just do your research and find something that's gonna be reliable and google common issues for the model and year, see if they're known to be pretty reliable or have a lot of issues.
Other than that I can't be of much help, I buy old Toyotas off craigslist for cheap and know what I'm looking for and how to inspect them.

Look for your local libstate incentives to go EV. Then get a leaf on the cheap and never look back. I used to be scared of some karma that would come my way for touting how problem free leafs are, but not anymore. 7 years and my only issue has been new tires and running out of wiper fluid.
7 years in a leaf will save you a lot of time, money and headaches.

Call a local shop and get a quote. Meet with the mechanic and see what his thoughts are.
Supply chain and labour is pretty fucked right now it might be a while before they could drop it in, even if it made financial sense to do it. If you gotta wait 6 weeks without the van you should consider that too.

Also the resale value of a used Hyundai with a new/rebuilt transmission just thrown in might be a lot more now that it was a couple years ago, so might be a better chance of being worth fixing just to sell. The used car market sucks right now and everything is going for a lot more.
