★★★ Official Nordic / Baltic P. semilanceata season 2022 ★★★ * 5
    #27881296 - 07/29/22 03:59 AM (1 year, 5 months ago)

So after a summer of quite cringeworthy weather on my part, there are no sour grapes
however, as these little guys come to greet me at the rear end of the not so sunny season:

Found this morning in a damp forest road somewhere in western Norway.

Very nice! Beauties. So it begins, congratulations Anglerfish! :toast:

It's still quite warm and dry in my whereabouts. Checked a couple of places yesterday, but didn't see any semilanceatas or medullosas. Saw some Ph. cyanopus tho, so might visit the habitat in a few days.

Nice! Went for a hunt today. Couldn't find any tho. It has been warm and dry lately so probably have to wait a couple weeks before the season starts here

There was an observation today from northern Finland by another member of our Finnish psilocybin mushroom community. Seems it's starting in here aswell!

Ah didn't know that! Season is just around the corner then where I live!
Went to my second meadow that yielded very well last year. Didn't find any tho. But we had some heavy rain yesterday so I'll try again next weekend

The location I found these typically delivers early. Last few years it has yielded surprisingly
large amounts already in late July. Typically growing in tall grass, so a bit of extra effort is
needed to spot them. They're fun to play hide-and-seek with, though.

I've always wanted to find some liberty caps

Thanks for sharing.

In the last picture where you have them all lined up, aprox. how many inches do you think that is?

Will they grow shorter stems if they are growing from grass that isn't tall? And can they grow really long like 8 inch stems if the grass is really tall?

They are the primary active species growing here.

7-8 inches from left to right, approximately.

In my experience they indeed tend to grow shorter in short grass, and often quite tall in taller grass.
But this varies, no rule without exceptions.

Oh wow! So the mushrooms themselves are like 4+/- inches tall? That's awesome. I hear you had to collect a bunch if you planned to eat some.
Also- I've heard that some mushrooms when dried lose way more potency than the fresh version. Is this true? And if so, what do you think the ratio of loss is with the Liberty caps? Like, I've heard that it can be so much so with some species like Panaeolus cinctulus, syn. Panaeolus subbalteatus that you really only want to eat them fresh or you end up having to eat like 14g dry or something like that! Are the liberty caps like that?
I really want to visit Norway someday! I always think of the vikings when I hear the word Norway. And on the Vikings TV show they were eating liberty caps, really crazy episode when they go up to the spiritual houses and stuff and trip out.

If dried and stored properly, liberty caps will lose very little potency. They stay potent for years on end, in my experience.

The vikings eating mushrooms is a myth though. There are no reliable sources to document any use of entheogens among the nordic people.
It is probably a mixup due to the swedish priest and missionary Samuel Ödman who made an assumption that viking berserkers ate Amanita
muscaria to get in "battle mood". This assumption was probably made on the basis of the fact that certain Siberian tribes had done this
as a means of healing and shamanism.

So if anyone comes along claiming use of psilocybin mushrooms in Norway prior to the seventies, the above mentioned myth is probably the source.

I think it's not just that myth, but the continued proliferation of that myth. But there is history of of the seers and pagans though right? It wouldn't surprise me one bit that the vikings ate mushrooms. Also- I mean, historical evidence of mushrooms is like impossible to find anyways, any liberty caps lets say buried with the dead would decompose into dust. I personally believe SOMEONE in Norway was eating liberty caps back then, don't you? I just can't see how they couldn't .

That's really neat to hear about them losing very little potency, but years on end? I've read lots of articles and reports that say after a year or so potency is WAY down with most mushrooms. Are you talking about storing them in a zero oxygen environment in a cool dark place like filling jars with O2 absorbers and such? Or is it just something unique about the liberty caps storing for a long time?

I was unsuccessful last year, but I know that I should start hunting earlier this year due to living so far north in Norway.
Also coping with some paranoia about being "busted" lol

Trust me, unless you do something very obviously stupid, there's very little chance of getting attention from the law.

Depending on where you are, it should nonetheless be quite easy for you to find a good area to look in.
And you should start now, try your luck a little high up in the hills. Roughly how far north are you?

Went for a short walk with my dogs today and look what I found!

I found them on the same spot I found my first from last year. It's a tractor road just beside a meadow. Very busy road with a lot of exercisers so

I know this is not a thread to ask for ID but if anyone have the time. Please let me know of you see something that I should not consume. This is my second year hunting. Those 2 on the far right on the a4 paper I'm not 100% sure is p.semilanceata

Nice, you're at it!

Your two "suspicious" ones look like P. semilanceata as well.
