Used car shopping
    #27879908 - 07/27/22 10:12 PM (1 year, 5 months ago)

Is this a money matter? I need to buy a car ASAP. I have no knowledge or experience when it comes to cars. Any advice?

Used car market is fucking shit right now.  Everything is so expensive.  See if you have a Carmax near you.

When Buying Used Cars...

Step 1:  Decide what type of car you want, and subsequently your preferred makes/models.

Step 2:  Research car prices and listings, and create a file for referencing your favorites and taking subsequent notes when you go see/test drive it.

  • https://kbb.com - Use this to get a basic idea of the generally accepted price ranges for a specific vehicle.

  • https://craigslist.com - Can provide some of the best prices, especially in or near a major metropolitan area (I've personally bought and sold via Craigslist more than once), however you will have to spend some time refining your search and sifting through a bunch of BS with regard to the not-so-good offers or unresponsive/unreliable sellers.  In other words, you need to feel comfortable doing some grunt work with regard to the initial search, and the face to face meeting and negotiating terms of the sale.

  • https://carvana.com, https://autotrader.com, https://cars.com, https://carmax.com, https://shift.com, https://www.edmunds.com/used-cars-for-sale/, https://carfax.com - Use these websites to compare and contrast the real asking prices for various vehicles.  You may even find something worth buying, but if you're dead set on sourcing a screaming deal, these sites are generally best used as a reference/negotiating point for a private sale listed on Craigslist.

Step 3:  Once you've personally seen and driven a car you like, and the seller has accepted an offer that is within your budget, take the car to a mechanic for a general inspection.  Look up local mechanics on Yelp and hope you can find one with a solid reputation.  Then call them and tell them you are interested in buying the vehicle and would like them to give it an inspection and offer an honest opinion on its condition, reliability, and if they think the price you're planning to pay is fair.  If a private seller won't let you take their car to a mechanic (with or without them), walk away.  An basic inspection should cost anywhere from $50-$150, it won't catch every problem, but if you found a good mechanic, it can help uncover potential issues with the car and is well worth the time and money for peace of mind when you're laying out thousands of dollars on the purchase.

Step 4:  Pull a CarFax report with the VIN of the vehicle you intend to purchase.  This can be especially useful if you're buying a salvage title vehicle (as I have done on multiple occasions), as it's worth knowing if the salvage incident occurred a long while ago vs just yesterday, as you can have more confidence in the repairs being done well if the car has driven tens of thousands of miles since being repaired.

Step 5:  If everything has checked out up to this point and you are ready to take possession of the vehicle, write up a Contract or Bill of Sale agreement (I have attached a template to this post).  You can amend the details however you need to in order to accommodate the payment.  Make sure you've verified the seller's identity and that it matches the vehicles current/active registration.  You'll then need to process payment and receive the pink slip and executed release of ownership from the seller.  Head to the DMV to process the transfer, get car insurance and enjoy your new ride!

Going to be a broken record here but it’s for the greater good of the shroomery

Buy electric. If you want my suggestion for affordability and reliability - Nissan Leaf, or if MINO, Tesla.

Yeah, the economy is tanking, a lot of the boomer/older gen x car shops are retiring now, there won't be a whole lot of car repair places within the next several years. Get a car that is going to LAST like a corolla, civic, camry, accord. Definitely don't get anything that is a gas guzzler. If you really need a truck like for work, get an older model F-150/250. Those are the only trucks that will LAST.

Everything you look at is going to be overpriced. If you're going to get an older car, you can't go wrong with a 98-2001 corolla or even a little bit newer. Or the same year civic. Those engines are RESILIENT. One time in my old 98 corolla, I had no clue my engine was running bare dry. Good thing I went to the mechanics for some other reason and he told me. The engine just kept going even though it was almost dry. Another mechanic told me the same thing about civics, they are very resilient and will keep going under the strangest conditions like very low oil. LOL.
