Yeah they soak up a lot of water. My casing layer was a little thicker and it would get dry so I would just spray it down good.

Check out this funky chunky wavy cap mutatation I've had since 3rd flush. They're sterile (yum)

On 4th flush.. about a dozen big ones growing now. Looks like they will all be like this fella, only quite a bit bigger.
For someone with no experience this has been an extremely rewarding and forgiving variety.
The strength of these has been absurd. Introspective and positive. Some experienced heads have told me these are more than 2x the strength of GTs. I am so proud to hear this.
I'd like to add that leading up to the harvest of the first flush, I had a pretty bad vert contam that was giving the fruit that choked-off-at-the-neck look, with big ol' bulbous stems and tiny undeveloped caps just ready to fall off if you look at them wrong. I managed to surgically remove with a scalpel. I literally cut the top 1/4" layer of my bulk ~13x21 cake off. Thankfully, this bold procedure ended the tyranny of the vert and brown blotch that I had caused with my mistakes.
It was a bit of a nightmare but I hydrated it well after surgery and said a prayer for this little friend before taking the crusty contaminated remains out to the yard for disposal.
I kicked a hole in the lawn against the house and tossed in the mess. Poorly covered it in sand and dead grass. And I'll be damned if it didnt start growing fruit in just 5 days. There are 2 more that you cant see in the picture.

it seems to me alot of the melmac does tomentose growth. low nutrient plates are the way to get rhizo. the melmak always gets amazing reviews from ppl. they are the best i think. what about APE? are they stronger than melly?
nice pics everyone. looks great.

What is an example of a low nutrient agar? I’m using MEA.

okay so like making regular plates i use
500ml H20 10g agar 10g malt (most of the time i use 7.5g nutrient source. malt just makes it clear for me so i like it best)
low nutrient would be
500ml H20 10g agar 4-7.5g malt or other nutrient source.
i mean you could use less. the mycelium really reaches out for some nutrients then.

The swab was labeled Melmac Homestead PE. Nothing special. This is from a clone, of course.

Biggest one was 90g. These were some early fruits. The rest of the tub is filling out nicely so will see if I end up with a nice flush. This variety has been a challenge for me. Swab was labeled "OG Melmak".

So I'm learning what slow growing means. These Melmacs tp are taking forever to grow. I've never grown any Macs or PE varieties, are these looking normal?

Took me well over a month to see pins on one of the TP cultures I had but then did this

Sometimes it’s best to write off a tub and stick it in a corner lol. Your tub’s conditions and pins look good so far

Thanks fahtster! I can only hope for something as nice as that tub. I would be so happy if mine turned out like that. I expected it was going to take a while so I have other things going to keep me busy.

Yea my TP takes almost 2 months to finish too. He a little slow but he got the spirit.
When something takes so long to fruit it makes clean spawn that much more important because it can easily sour before fruiting.

Yeah clean spawn is CRITICAL with MMTP.
Mine took so long I almost threw the tub out thinking something was wrong. The it had two pins that barely grew for a week until finally a real pinset came in.
They’re well worth the wait though.
