Melmac w/o Top Layer

I decided to run a few monos of melmac with out any sort of top layer. The initial reason was I hydrated 1000g of coir for two 54qt tubs and free poured the coir a little heavy on the first tub and said screw it. Most arguments I hear for PE top layers are to keep in moisture and to help reduce blobs. Since running Pasty’s EZ dial tubs there has never been a lack of moisture on my subs. My blob issues have never been overwhelming either.
Anyways… The surfaces have colonized well and surface conditions look excellent!!
Can any one offer a critique on my decision? I’m here to learn and not argue. Any feed back is always appreciated.

I think your decision was made under duress and coercion. If youre being held against your will then blink out the word "torture" so your captors dont get suspicious and we'll send in a team for extraction.

It can vary culture to culture but I think you’ll be fine. I like to have a top layer just to protect the exposed grains even if it’s a super thin one just enough to cover them, but these 2.5 gallon mak bags were made without any type of TL:

Be sure to update this thread as to how it turns out!

That’s very encouraging. I’ll be sure to post pics of the result.

I have a few tubs of melmac days away from pinning. I didn't use any casing, or put a layer on the grains. Just mixed spawn and substrate together and put the lid on. I'll take pics of how mine turn out. There MS fyi. Looking for genetics.

Here’s an update. I ran into a little hiccup. I discovered a draft near the door jam that dried out a portion of tub #1. It has since recovered and I made some adjustments to my room setup to compensate for this issue. So far no blobs and pins are starting to form nicely as well as some early fruits. Surface conditions on tub #2 are excellent.

Here’s Tub #2.

I’m noticing that these fruits are different than what I’m used to with this culture. I’m not sure if it’s the lack of top layer or the first run with EZ Dial monos. I think they need more air. Might add a couple extra holes. I’d still call this a success.
