I need help identifying....
    #2786209 - 06/11/04 09:57 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

hey all....i found a bunch of mushrooms growing in the forest next to my house, and took them all up...I looked around on the ent and Im pretty sure that theyre Panaeolus subbalteatus....but not 100% positive....They have a pitch black sporeprint, hollow stems, veils are dark and then fade to white at the ends...and the stem also fades to white at the bottom and has vertical grooves in it...here are some pics....Any help would be great..I dont plan on eating them until i am 100% sure of what they are...the cap size and stem sizes of most of the average sized shrooms i got match that of what is listed on mushroom johns site...so thanks for any =one willing to help me out

Look at the spore print under a light. It can be hard to tell if it's black or brown. Did you note any blueing? Are the gills brown? It *looks* like Panaeolina foenisecii to me; they are inactive despite claims of "eastern specimens being quite potent."

Prob want to wait for a mod to come around. They might be subbs, but they could be a relative as well. They can resemble one another quite closely sometimes. One of the mods should be able to tell you more. Just some humble advice.

It usually doesn't them long to respond. Also, there are other members with adequate experience at ID's as well. However, I would wait for multiple responses. How many of these did you find?

Ok. White fringes on gills? You have Panaeolus subbalteatus. That is a key factor in indentification an differentiating between the two lookalike species. Many times they don't bruise blue. You will need a good amount of specimens to trip. Not sure how many but I heard that 40 was good dosage, wait for otehr people to tell you about that. Check that patch often; they will grow back.

And come to think of it, the stems are thick and resemble Panaeolus Subbalteatus.

In the grass. Err, that is RARE for Panaeolus subbalteatus. I am having second thoughts. Wait for some other opinions.

P.S.- I am not trying to postwhore; I'm just to lazy to edit posts.

Pan Subbs sometimes fruit on lawns, but more commonly Pan foenisecii. Make sure that the spore print is black, don't let your eyes show you what you want to see. Those look a lot like what is on my avatar, which are pan foens, not subbs. I wish Mj were around... Have you got any clearer pics??

Not really. They look about right... thick and somewhat long. The white fringes to be are a dead give away. If the spore print is black, I would suggest a bioassay.

They are neither Panaeolus subbalteatus or panaeolina foenisecii.

The caps are not the right shapes and the stems atre too long and skinny for eaier species.

Pictures are relly to blurred to ID /

Those stems are not think and in no way do they resemble the stems of Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Hey now, don?t be too eager to give an ID. We don?t know what these mushrooms were growing from. The only information we have is they were growing from the "forrest near his house."

Were the mushrooms growing from wood? Leaf litter? Soil? Moss? Some other substrate?

We really have to know what they?re growing from to make a positive ID.

Here?s a comparison of a jet black spore print to a dark brown one:

Sorry about jumping to conclusions. But he did note, "well i found about 10 clusters of them in the grass near the forest." It was in the grass; it gives a jet black spore print. Kind of reminds me of GumbyDude's "mystery Pan." I don't know how safe a bioassay would be. But, for harm reduction's sake, I would NOT advise a bioassay. Although, you know, you could do one to tell us whether it is active.
