Albuquerque to honor Breaking Bad’s meth cooks with bronze statues

Albuquerque to unveil statues of Breaking Bad’s Walter White and Jesse Pinkman
July 12, 2022 - The Guardian

Show’s creator wants to ‘give something back’ to New Mexico city and hopes statues will attract ‘busloads of tourists’

Officials at the New Mexico city of Albuquerque are planning to unveil bronze statues honoring the two main characters of Breaking Bad, the popular TV show about a chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with cancer and starts to distribute crystal meth with a former student to secure his family’s financial future.

The statues, portraying protagonist Walter White and his sidekick Jesse Pinkman, were commissioned in 2019 by the show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, as a way to “give something back” to Albuquerque, according to a news release from the city’s government.

Gilligan, who also created the spin-off series Better Call Saul, donated the statues along with Sony Pictures Television and hopes they will attract “busloads of tourists” to Albuquerque, which serves as the setting for both shows and the related movie El Camino.

“Over the course of 15 years, two TV shows and one movie, Albuquerque has been wonderful to us,” Gilligan said.

But not everyone celebrated the news of the statues. On Twitter, users criticized the decision to erect statues commemorating fictional drug dealers who committed murders to protect their business in a city with a notorious history of drug trafficking and high rates of deadly overdoses.

“They’re erecting statues in honor of characters who were meth dealers, addicts, and murderers in a city known for rampant meth addiction and drug problems,” wrote one user on Twitter. “wtf is going on in the world.”

Another user said that although the show had “amazing performances”, it was “still amusing to see such beloved, um, meth makers, get this tribute”.

The statues, made by sculptor Trevor Grove, will be revealed on 29 July at the Albuquerque convention center. Those scheduled to attend the ceremony include Mayor Tim Keller, Gilligan, the series’ two main actors – Bryan Cranston, who portrays White, and Aaron Paul, who plays Pinkman – and executive producer Peter Gould.

Breaking Bad ran from 2008 through 2013, chronicling how a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turned into a meth-dealing kingpin with the help of an ex-student to pay for his medical debts. More than 10 million people watched the finale of the series, which over its run won 10 Emmys and earned another 48 nominations.

Data from New Mexico True, the state tourism department, shows tourism increased after 2011. Numerous Breaking Bad tours have also popped up in the city to offer tourists the chance to visit some of the show’s locations, including the supposed homes of White and Pinkman as well as the fast-food restaurant owned by antagonist Gus Fring, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito.

Sounds about right hahaha...

So while we are re-creating the history we are teaching kids, belittling the names of our founders, tearing down statues of people who held historic significance (albeit open to interpretation)...we are now building new statues to this! Hahahaha....

Reminds me of a show “The Man In the High Castle” where the Nazis won world war 2, and they tore down the Statue of Liberty, and burned all the “false history books”, and put up “popular statues” they called it “Jahr Null” (year zero) or (The New Year).

If you think power to the people is a good thing, then you don’t know (most) people lol.

There are other ways to honor their hard work as actors, especially given the roles they portrayed....

While we’re at it...can we make a statue of Robert E. Lee? Not the real guy...but the one who portrayed him in the movies as a white slave owning general of the confederate army, he did a really good job in that movie and looked so real!  =]

Oh wait...they already tore it down, spray painted it, dissasembled it, and locked it away.

'Breaking Bad' statues spark debate around Albuquerque
July 13, 2022 - KOAT

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Debbie Hall is not dealing drugs, she just palms candy to her customers on a daily basis. She sells candy that resembles blue meth from the famous tv show Breaking Bad.

“In the beginning, they bought maybe 20 pounds and they made that last,” Hall said.

In 2008 the production approached Hall about making candy that resembles blue meth for the show.

Since, she has sold it as a novelty, and it's brought her a lot of business.

“From 2012 to 2017 I didn’t have a day off,” Hall said.

When Hall heard that the city of Albuquerque will be putting up statues of Breaking Bad's main characters Walter White and Jesse Pinkman she was excited. The statues were gifted to the city.

“That brings people here it provides Old Town with an income, it provides me with an income,” Hall said.

The mayor's office agrees in a statement they said, "The positive impact that the cast and crew of Breaking Bad have had on our economy and film industry can't be minimized. The franchise has had over $385 million in economic impact, lifting up countless local businesses."

The statues will be unveiled at the Albuquerque Convention Center on the July 29. While some say the statues will help bring in tourism, others say they may ruin the image of the city.

“I feel that Breaking Bad has a lot of issues related to drugs, and if it has to do with statues related to drugs, I’m against it,” said Lucille Leuppe-Esplain, a resident of Albuquerque.

“Well, I believe either side has got value,” said Caroline Meade.

Mead's home is famous, it's featured in 'Better Call Saul' as Chuck's house.

“I think if they put up two statues and you keep your sense of humor about it, it would be fine. But it is a drug show. So, yeah, you know, I can see both sides of that," Meade said.

As for Hall, she recommends those who are against the statues to watch the show and really analyze what it's about, as one of her 7-year-old customers did.

“He said I watched the show and I don't want to be like them. I learned not to do drugs,” Hall said.

The same can be said about all the statues they have already torn down in fury. Let’s take Stonewall Jackson for example,

People should analyze the civil war, and see what it was really about...I learned a lot about the civil war, and learned that slavery was bad, and that the way our governments work is checks and balance, and that sometimes what states want, has to be kept in check by federal regulations and laws...

Still think it’s idiotic that while they rip apart actual historic figures, they can make others dedicated to charectors who obviously were controversial...

Fun fact about Stonewall Jackson...

Did you know that he was a horrible horrible person who beat and raped his slaves, and killed them for pleasure, and did it only for money, then fought for the confederacy to keep slavery alive??? You have probably heard something like this from mass media outlets, or from less educated people seeking to take advantage of other people’s lack of education.

Stonewall Jackson was himself an “underpaid teacher”. He did obtain 3 slaves in his life, the purpose of owning them was to prevent them from falling into the hands of cruel, and abusive owners.  He was against slavery, yet because he was very religious...and the Bible offered many examples of slavery, he did officially support it.

This same horrible person then took $ he had earned from his military career + teaching, and founded a school for underprivileged slaves, or recently freed men of color...which by the way broke the state laws in Virginia at the time.

He placed great importance on increasing the knowledge and capabilities of slaves, as they needed to learn to read and write in order to understand the Bible, but to also be able to support themselves better once they were freed.

It’s a good thing we ripped those statues apart, that’s a horrible message to send, and so offensive to people who’s ancestors suffered from slavery.

Meanwhile....I don’t think making a statue to this character is offensive at all, and anyone who is recovering from meth amphetamine addiction, or who has lost a loved one, a child, parent, etc...they should just watch the show...and realize that he only did it because life wasn’t fair to him and he needed more money...and the people he murdered deserved it, so who cares. Anyone who’s offended by murder, or drug dealing, or anything of the sort just needs to be hmmmm “re-educated”?

I think that Stonewall Jackson’s attempts to limit the damage of slavery, build schools, and defend his homeland is so so much more offensive...really think about it...he was a horrible person. And anyone who portrays him in movies should be brought up on equal charges of racism too!

Finally; why not just build a school, or name a park, or something less....”visually invasive” to commemorate the actual actor, instead of his character and his deeds within the movie?

Case closed. Rant done.

Lol I drove through Albuquerque a few years ago and did the whole Breaking Bad tour (not an actual tour but just driving around to some of the points of interest from the show, like Walter's house, Jesse's house, etc.).

Walter White & Jesse Pinkman statues seem a bit much, but there's no denying that the series (along with Better Call Saul) have put Albuquerque on a whole different level of notoriety.

Russia made a clone of the show “Married with Children” it was a very very popular show, but now is coming under fire cause of all the sensitive people, but anyways...Russia made a statue to “Al Bundy” who was a shoe salesman who hated his life, and his wife, and his kids...etc. but very comical.

A lot of Americans condemned it though, they called it extremely sexist, Mysogenistic, etc. in fact I do believe they tried to make 1 back in the late 90’s?? Here in America, but it never got approval because they said “it would champion ideals that are outdated and should not be supported by the general public due to its highly offensive nature”

I got nothing against putting up statues lol...just can’t stand the double standard that seems to be leaking from the “left”.

Here is a list of all the statues that have been severely damaged, or removed through rioting recently.

You’ll even find that Abraham Lincoln makes the list, as well as several other surprising names....letssss goooo!!!

“Re-Education” always works wonders!!!!

Its good to honor those old timey American meth cooks (even fictional ones) since the cartel has since took their jobs. Adding to movie statues i want to see, including robocop in Detroit and Rocky in Philly

This article was titled “Breaking Bad, New Jersey Style”
https://www.foxnews.com/us/nj-cop-busted-for-running-meth-lab-out-of-home

Can we make a statue to this cop in NJ please? It’s legit, and I imagine he had some “good reasons”, or at least make a good show about it...I know just the actor -hint hint.

By the way I loved Breaking Bad, but if Walt & Jesse get statues, then Tony Soprano needs a statue in New Jersey

Entrenched elitists like the teachers, cops, and their poster children, are the only ones who want to fight turf wars.

Vice is usually the purpose of their captured industries and color of authority.

Outlaws are typically voluntaryist, in my experience.
