Its been three weeks. I now finally have a hygrometer.

I bought this kick-ass Oregon-Scientific wireless hygrometer. Its cool, right now im observing the temp and humidity in the terranium while sitting on my couch;)

BUT!

I find the terranium is staying at around 80F. This should be OK shouldnt it? I have an icepak in there now that is dropping the temp.

Also, my humidity is reading 70%. There is water droplets all over the drip sheild. It is reading 20% higher than the ambient air outside the terranium though. Im leaving the humidifier on for awhile to see if i cant raise the moisture to 90+ (it just went up 1%)

I have a couple questions. As of now, i have no perlite in the bottom. It is just a puddle of water for now. Do i need the perlite to stabilize the moisture? i heard the fluctuation in humidity actually helps the cakes fruit....

also, i accidentally left the ultrasonic humidifier on over night the other night. When i checked the cake i found it wet with water. I dried it off as best i could, do you think its OK?

Luckily, i only put one cake in there for now, to see if i could get it to pin. Once i do, the rest go in!!!

Well, lets wait on the humidity question, as it is rising steadily every minute, and the humidifier isnt even on. It seems to take a good half hour before it will settle in on the right %

80% and rising!

what out for the puddle of water. It is ripe environment for contams. I drilled a hole in the bottle of my terrarium and ran tubing back into the humidifer. Save water, eliminate water build up.

ARGH! forget that! i just read in the specs that this hygrometer maxes out at 90%RH.

It must be pegged now, as its reading 93%. i should try the salt test....

put a dub of salt in a sealed jar along with the hygrometer. After 6 hours or so the meter should read 75%. If it reads 70%, just remember it always reads 5% low

If you put perlite in, it will help to stabilize the humidity -- water that drips to the floor will have a greater surface area to re-evaporate from perlite than from the floor.

The temperatures are fine.

And, one little nitpick -- it's terrarium.  No N.

It's what people mis-read "terrarium" as.   Seriously, there's no such word.

alright, so if an idiot can make a pf cake fully colonize than a 5 year old could do it:) "Terranium" should be in the FAQ's hahaha....

Well, i just dunked and rolled 5 more cakes and put them in the terraRium, I guess now i need to wait another week before i give up? (ill just be flat-out amazed if i can even get one pin, i dont have the greenest of thumbs)

Also, im planning on saving my last cake to crumble and case with in a small tupperware container. I hope i have room in the terrarium

Naw, you don't want a green thumb.  This is mushroom growing we're talking about.  Something pale and clammy that's never seen the sun would probably be more appropriate.

HA! well then i should be a GREAT shroom grower!!!!:D

Well, it looks as if the chamber rose to 83F again, im not sure if i want to go through the trouble of cooling it down everyday for the rest of the summer. I think ill take my chances at 83, i should be OK right?

cool, this is making me feel better. THe humidity is keeping the walls wet and the cakes are not soaked. I only have the humidifier running for 2 minutes twice a day, at midnight and noon. I try to fan it a couple times a day too.

Its also a little strange i think that after i fan and exchange air, the humidity stays up there even without the USH, it must be b/c of the thermally sealed chamber
