Is my cpu acting funny?
    #27852385 - 07/06/22 05:25 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

I7 8700k Delided with liquid metal, since 2018. Cryorig low profile heatsink/140mmfan

The picture shows the cpu temps holding around low to high 40's with random lows in the 30s and random quick highs in the low 50's. never seen it touch 60
During regular game play. Last pic is temps when i turn the game off and its idle.

2 questions...

What other specs should i be monitoring, i still have 1 button not being used, or i could make a new page and add more info boxes.

The hard question, my cpu usage to temp ratio doesn't seem balanced. When i casually using the pc for simple tasks and just browsing youtube looking at the mini video scans and not opening them, my cpu usage jumps from 2% to 14% and the temp go from 30ish to high 40 and super quickly back down again when i back off.

One last thing to mention i never see my cpu usage get to 30% or higher, is this normal? I also never ran a benchmark so idk if this is a issue.

CPU usage low, temp low, cooling loop shuts off or runs low power to save energy, CPU usage jumps, temp jumps, cooling loop turns on once the sensor reads the temperature jump, takes a few seconds to get going, temp goes back down a few seconds later.

Sounds like you got way more CPU than you actually use.

Maybe

Im just paranoid about there maybe being poor contact with the die though, i seen where after i put everything together that what other people where doing is replacing the cpu die cover without any silicone adhesive and it was giving way better temps and performance, (better contact). Ever since then its been in the back of my head saying "damit i put the adhesive on, damn it!"

My fear is with it never seeing 20% load and seeing temps at 50C
When it does hit say 50% load will it then be in the 100's?
And what if it hits 90% load, will it be in the 200's? ahhhhh

Try it and find out.

Assuming your computer was built in the 21st century, it should have an emergency temp killswitch hardcoded into BIOS that will prevent actual damage.

it does but..

im not loaded with cash and i put alot of time and money in my build

im not woozy headed and going balls to the wall till i fry it or shutdown something

my goal is to never get anywhere close to a killswitch

my goal is to take the set up i have and try to get it and keep it as cool as i can all the while getting a good effective and efficient performing machine

but i digress

I think most computers automatically start throttling power at 80C. And catch fire around 100C.

Ya i cant take it anymore

im just gona freaking do it

i will take it apart, remove the adhesive layer, apply plenty of fresh liquid metal just to scratch that itch too

and finally get some sleep

this way i will know for sure all connections and details are at its very best

so next time i see my temp playing pingpong i can just sit back and enjoy the show

thanks for the chit chat Kryptos

You should look into a CPU liquid cooler temps are always low and silent cooling. 3rd build with a liquid cooler and ill never go back to air cooled.

Hope ya got it all worked out.

Sounds like it could have been the thermocoupler (temp meter). Maybe that was acting up. Adding new liquid metal was a great idea thou.

ya i picked the 7 series because it was the best cpu around the time i was planning the new build

Update:

The cpu core temps did not change, that tells me i already had good performing temps.

I did replace the cpu with fresh and more liquid metal on the die for good measure.

I replaced the Artic 4 paste will thermal grizzly for the cpu/cooler
I have not noticed any gain or loss with the change
*With this knowledge*
i will eventually switch back to Artic 4
for the only reason of i like the way it spreads compared the grizzly, it's
more of a peace of personal mind thing over a data driven performance analysis thing

Guy doesn't have a lot of money and isn't going crazy with the OC and thrashing the CPU, then why the fuck bother to de-lid?

it was more of a exploration of the hobby of pc building, the i7 was notoriously known for running hot and at the time deliding sounded like a must have feature for my shinny new build. Good times.

Yeah, it is an awesome thing to do to lower temps, and on some CPU the temp drop is massive.  AMD were notorious for having too much lid, and removing a mm or 2 made a huge difference when done right.  But it's slightly risky, especially if you don't have the money to throw at a new CPU.  It can also backfire.  Liquid metal is conductive, obviously you were careful in application or you protected parts from shorting by using something like nail polish.
